🔧 Explorer - Engine Mount Replacement

Your Explorer uses upper engine and transmission mounts plus lower torque mounts that control drivetrain movement. Replace only one mount at a time while supporting the powertrain; replacing every mount is an advanced job because access underneath is tight.

Assumption: This procedure covers the stock 3.5L powertrain and provides separate notes where AWD access differs.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the engine with an engine support bar before loosening any upper mount.
  • ⚠️ Never work under your Explorer while it is supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Do not place a jack directly against the aluminum oil pan or transmission case.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the battery tray or transmission mount.
  • ⚠️ Allow the engine, exhaust, and catalytic converters to cool completely.
  • ⚠️ Replace one mount at a time so the powertrain remains correctly positioned.
  • ⚠️ AWD models have tighter access around the PTU and driveshaft; do not force the engine out of alignment.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Explorer on level, solid ground. Shift into Park and engage the parking brake.
  • 🛞 Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
  • 🧊 Let the powertrain and exhaust cool completely.
  • 📸 Photograph each mount, bracket, hose, and wiring-clip position before removal.
  • 🔩 Compare every replacement mount with the removed mount before installation.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal. Keep it isolated from the battery post.
  • 🧰 An engine support bar spans the fender structure and holds the engine from above with an adjustable chain.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack at the approved front-center lifting point and raise your Explorer.
  • Position both 3-ton jack stands beneath the approved front-side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle onto the stands, leave the floor jack unloaded, and gently push the body to confirm stability.
  • Use the rechargeable work light to inspect all mounts for torn rubber, collapsed spacing, or leaked hydraulic fluid.

Step 2: Remove the Upper Access Components

  • Use the 8mm socket and flat-blade trim tool to remove the air-inlet duct and air-cleaner housing fasteners.
  • Release electrical connectors by pressing their locking tabs. Do not pull on the wires.
  • Use the 10mm socket to remove the battery hold-down, then lift out the battery with both hands.
  • Use the 10mm and 13mm sockets to remove the battery tray for access to the left transmission mount.
  • Use the plastic drain pan beneath any reservoir hose that must be moved. Do not disconnect an air-conditioning line.
  • Label every connector before unplugging it.

Step 3: Install the Engine Support Bar

  • Fit the rated engine support bar across the reinforced body edges according to its instructions.
  • Attach its chain to the factory engine lifting eye and remove slack with the bar’s adjuster.
  • Raise the chain only until it carries the engine’s weight. Do not lift the body.
  • Use the paint marker to mark the original mount and bracket positions.

Step 4: Replace the Right-Side Engine Mount

  • Move the coolant reservoir aside only if necessary, using the 8mm or 10mm socket on its retaining fasteners. Keep its hoses connected.
  • Use the 15mm and 18mm sockets with the breaker bar to loosen the right mount-to-body and mount-to-engine bracket fasteners.
  • Adjust the engine support bar slightly until the bolts slide freely. Never use the bolts to pull the engine into position.
  • Remove the old mount and compare its locating tabs, height, and bolt spacing with the replacement.
  • Place the replacement mount against the original paint marks and install every fastener by hand.
  • Use the torque wrench and tighten the right-side mount fasteners to the specification supplied with the matched fastener kit or current Ford service information. Do not estimate these structural fastener torques.
  • Reinstall the coolant reservoir with the 8mm or 10mm socket and verify that no hose is stretched or pinched.

Step 5: Replace the Left-Side Transmission Mount

  • Keep the powertrain supported with the engine support bar.
  • Use the 15mm and 18mm sockets with extensions to loosen the transmission-mount fasteners beneath the battery-tray area.
  • Use the support-bar adjuster to remove tension from the bolts, then remove the mount.
  • Compare the old and new mount, including locating pins and bracket orientation.
  • Install the replacement mount and start all fasteners by hand before tightening any one fastener.
  • Use the torque wrench and tighten the transmission-mount fasteners to the specification supplied with the matched fastener kit or current Ford service information.
  • Use the 10mm and 13mm sockets to reinstall the battery tray, but leave the battery out until the lower mounts are complete.

Step 6: Replace the Front Lower Torque Mount

  • A torque mount, also called a roll restrictor, limits how far the drivetrain twists during acceleration.
  • Use the 8mm, 10mm, or 13mm socket as fitted to remove the lower splash shield.
  • Use the 15mm, 18mm, or 21mm socket with the breaker bar to remove the front torque-mount fasteners.
  • Adjust the engine support bar only enough to let the bolts slide out without binding.
  • Install the new mount in the same orientation and start both fasteners by hand.
  • Use the torque wrench and tighten the fasteners to the specification supplied with the matched fastener kit or current Ford service information.

Step 7: Replace the Rear Lower Torque Mount

  • Use the rechargeable work light to locate the rear mount between the powertrain and rear portion of the front subframe.
  • On FWD models, use the 15mm, 18mm, or 21mm sockets with extensions and the universal-joint adapter to reach its fasteners.
  • On AWD models, inspect clearance around the PTU, driveshaft, exhaust, and heat shields before removing anything.
  • If an AWD fastener cannot be withdrawn without removing the PTU, driveshaft, exhaust, or lowering the subframe, stop and have this mount replaced by a properly equipped shop.
  • Use the breaker bar and correct socket to remove accessible rear-mount fasteners while the engine support bar carries the powertrain.
  • Install the replacement mount in its original orientation and hand-start every fastener.
  • Use the torque wrench and tighten the fasteners to the specification supplied with the matched fastener kit or current Ford service information.
  • Never pry against the PTU or transmission case.

Step 8: Settle the Powertrain

  • Confirm that every mount is installed and that all fasteners have been tightened correctly.
  • Slowly release tension from the engine support bar and watch for unusual mount movement or trapped wiring.
  • Use the torque wrench to perform a final torque check on each accessible fastener.
  • Remove the engine support bar only after the powertrain rests evenly on all mounts.

Step 9: Reassemble the Vehicle

  • Use the 8mm, 10mm, and 13mm sockets to reinstall the splash shield, air-cleaner housing, intake duct, and remaining brackets.
  • Use the 10mm socket to reinstall the battery hold-down.
  • Connect the positive terminal first if it was disconnected, then connect the negative terminal with the 10mm socket.
  • Apply a light coating of battery-terminal protectant after the connections are secure.
  • Use the floor jack to lift your Explorer, remove both jack stands, and lower it carefully.

  • ✅ Check that no tools, loose fasteners, or disconnected electrical plugs remain in the engine compartment.
  • 🚗 Start the engine with the transmission in Park and listen for knocking or metal contact.
  • 🦶 Hold the brake firmly and shift slowly through Reverse, Neutral, and Drive. Excessive clunking indicates a loose, incorrect, or misaligned mount.
  • 🔍 Check that the engine does not pull on hoses, wiring, intake ducts, or exhaust components.
  • 🛣️ Take a short, low-speed test drive and recheck for vibration during idle, acceleration, and shifting.
  • 🕒 Reinspect all visible mounts and battery connections after the first drive.
