🔧 Sentra - Engine Mount Replacement

Your Sentra uses a right-side engine mount, left-side transmission mount, and rear torque mount to support the powertrain and control movement. Replace one mount at a time while the engine and transmission remain supported; replacing all mounts simultaneously can let the powertrain shift out of position.

Assumption: This procedure covers both the factory 6-speed manual and CVT, with transmission-specific differences clearly identified.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle only at its approved lift points and place it securely on jack stands before working underneath.
  • ⚠️ Use an engine support bar from above. Never place any part of your body beneath an unsupported engine or transmission.
  • ⚠️ Replace only one mount at a time so the remaining mounts keep the powertrain aligned.
  • ⚠️ Do not lift directly against the aluminum oil pan or CVT case; either can crack.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal before removing the battery, battery tray, or left transmission mount.
  • ⚠️ Mount fasteners are structural. Replace damaged, stretched, rusty, or cross-threaded hardware.
  • ⚠️ Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely before replacing the rear torque mount.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Sentra on level, solid ground. Select Park on a CVT or first gear on a manual transmission, engage the parking brake, and chock both rear wheels.
  • 📋 Open the hood and let the engine cool completely.
  • 📋 If replacing all mounts, start with the right mount, continue with the left mount, and finish with the rear torque mount.
  • 📋 Photograph cable, hose, and bracket routing before disassembly.
  • 📋 An engine support bar spans the upper body structure and holds the engine with an adjustable chain. Position its feet only on strong, padded metal areas specified by the tool manufacturer—not on plastic trim, the windshield cowl, or thin sheet metal.
  • 📋 The CVT and 6-speed manual use different left mount components. Install only the mount supplied for the transmission fitted to your Sentra.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • Use the floor jack at the front center lifting point, then lower your Sentra onto jack stands at the front side support points.
  • Use the floor jack to test that the vehicle is stable before going underneath.
  • If additional side access is needed, use the 19mm wheel socket and breaker bar to loosen the appropriate front wheel nuts before lifting. Reinstall them later with the torque wrench to Torque to 113Nm (83 ft-lbs).

Step 2: Disconnect and remove the battery

  • Use the 10mm combination wrench to loosen and remove the negative battery terminal first.
  • Use the 10mm combination wrench to remove the positive terminal.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the battery hold-down.
  • Lift the battery straight upward and keep it upright.
  • Negative off first; negative on last.

Step 3: Remove the intake duct and battery tray

  • Use the flat-blade trim tool to release the intake-air duct retainers.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the air-cleaner duct clamp, then move the duct aside without pulling on attached wiring.
  • Use the 10mm and 12mm sockets with the ratchet to remove the battery-tray fasteners.
  • Use the needle-nose pliers or flat-blade trim tool to release wiring retainers from the tray, then remove the tray.

Step 4: Install the engine support bar

  • Position the 500kg engine support bar across strong, padded upper-body mounting areas according to its instructions.
  • Connect the support chain to the factory engine lifting eye. Do not attach it to the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, hoses, or wiring brackets.
  • Tighten the support-bar adjuster by hand until the chain is snug and carries light engine weight. Do not raise the engine yet.
  • Place the floor jack with its rubber saddle pad beneath a strong transmission rib only as a secondary support. Do not lift against the CVT pan or aluminum oil pan.

Step 5: Replace the right engine mount

  • From the passenger side, use the paint marker to outline the original mount position and mark each fastener location.
  • Use the 14mm, 17mm, or 18mm socket that fits the installed factory fasteners, with the breaker bar and extension, to loosen the mount-to-body fasteners.
  • Use the correctly fitting socket and breaker bar to loosen the mount-to-engine bracket fasteners.
  • Turn the engine-support-bar adjuster slowly until the mount becomes unloaded. Stop as soon as the fasteners move freely.
  • Use the ratchet and matching socket to remove the mount fasteners, then lift out the mount.
  • Compare the new and old mounts. Their brackets, locating tabs, and bolt spacing must match exactly.
  • Place the new mount on its locating points. Start every fastener by hand for at least five turns.
  • Adjust the engine support bar until the paint marks and bolt holes align naturally. Never pull the parts together with a bolt.
  • Use the ratchet and matching socket to snug the body-side and engine-side fasteners without fully tightening them.
  • Because Nissan uses different fastener diameters and bracket configurations at this mount, use the torque value supplied with the matched mount or Nissan service information for the exact fastener position. Do not apply one generic torque to every mount bolt.

Step 6: Settle the right mount

  • Use the engine-support-bar adjuster to lower the engine gradually until its weight rests naturally on the new mount.
  • Check with a flashlight that no hose, wiring harness, or air-conditioning line is stretched or trapped.
  • Use the torque wrench and matching socket to tighten each right-mount fastener to its position-specific Nissan specification.
  • Use the paint marker to place a witness line across each tightened fastener and bracket.

Step 7: Replace the left transmission mount

  • Keep the engine support bar attached. Use the floor jack and rubber saddle pad under a reinforced transmission rib as light secondary support.
  • For a CVT, keep the jack away from the stamped lower pan. For a 6-speed manual, keep it away from the drain plug and thin case edges.
  • Use the paint marker to outline the left mount and identify each fastener position.
  • Use the 14mm, 17mm, 18mm, or 19mm socket that fits each fastener, with the breaker bar and extension, to loosen the body-side and transmission-side fasteners.
  • Adjust the engine support bar slightly until the mount is unloaded, then use the ratchet and matching socket to remove its fasteners.
  • Remove the mount and compare its transmission bracket, body studs, height, and locating tabs with the replacement.
  • Install the transmission-correct replacement. Start every fastener by hand and align the paint marks before tightening.
  • Use the ratchet and matching socket to snug the fasteners, then lower the powertrain gently onto the mount with the support-bar adjuster.
  • Use the torque wrench and matching socket to tighten each fastener to the position-specific Nissan specification supplied for the CVT or 6-speed manual mount.
  • Correct alignment prevents vibration and torn mounts.

Step 8: Replace the rear torque mount

  • Confirm the exhaust is cold. Keep the engine support bar installed while working underneath.
  • Use the paint marker to mark the rear mount orientation and its relationship to the subframe and powertrain bracket.
  • Use the 17mm, 18mm, 19mm, or 21mm socket that fits the installed fasteners, with the breaker bar and extension, to loosen both mounting bolts.
  • Use the support-bar adjuster to move the engine only enough to remove tension from the bolts. Do not force or pry the powertrain sideways.
  • Use the ratchet and matching socket to remove the bolts and rear mount.
  • Install the new mount in the same direction as the original. Start both bolts by hand before using tools.
  • Use the ratchet and matching socket to snug the bolts, then let the powertrain settle naturally.
  • Use the torque wrench and matching socket to tighten both bolts to their position-specific Nissan specifications. Rear torque-mount values vary by bolt diameter and transmission, so verify the matched service data rather than using a generic value.

Step 9: Remove the supports

  • Inspect all three mounts with a flashlight and verify that their locating tabs sit flat.
  • Use the engine-support-bar adjuster to release tension slowly while watching for unexpected powertrain movement.
  • Remove the engine support bar and floor jack only after the mounts fully support the powertrain.
  • Use the paint marker to confirm every structural fastener has a completed torque witness mark.

Step 10: Reinstall the battery tray and intake

  • Set the battery tray in place and use the 10mm and 12mm sockets with the ratchet to reinstall its original fasteners.
  • Use the flat-blade trim tool to reinstall all wiring retainers.
  • Reconnect the intake duct and use the 10mm socket and ratchet to tighten its clamp securely without crushing the plastic duct.
  • Use the flat-blade trim tool to reinstall the intake retainers.

Step 11: Reinstall and connect the battery

  • Place the battery upright in its tray.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the battery hold-down. Tighten it only until the battery cannot move; do not deform the case.
  • Use the 10mm combination wrench to connect the positive battery terminal first.
  • Use the 10mm combination wrench to connect the negative battery terminal last.
  • Make sure both terminals are fully seated and cannot rotate by hand.

Step 12: Lower the vehicle

  • If a wheel was removed, install it and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the floor jack to lift your Sentra off the jack stands, remove the stands, and lower it to the ground.
  • Use the 19mm wheel socket and torque wrench in a crisscross pattern to Torque to 113Nm (83 ft-lbs).
  • Remove the wheel chocks only after testing is complete.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before starting the engine, verify that no tools remain in the engine compartment and that the intake duct is fully connected.
  • Start the engine with the transmission in Park or Neutral. Let it idle while watching the engine from the side; do not reach near belts or fans.
  • Switch the air conditioning on and off. A small change in vibration is normal, but heavy shaking, knocking, or metal contact is not.
  • With the brake pedal firmly held, move a CVT slowly through Reverse, Neutral, and Drive. On a manual, engage first gear and reverse gently without moving the vehicle. Stop if the powertrain jumps or clunks.
  • Reset the clock and automatic window function if they were lost after battery disconnection. To relearn the driver’s window, close it fully and hold the switch upward for several seconds.
  • Take a short, low-speed test drive. Listen for clunks during acceleration, braking, and gear changes.
  • Reinspect the mount positions and witness marks after the test drive. If vibration increased, stop driving and check mount orientation, alignment, and torque.
