🔧 Altima - Taillight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both rear taillight bulbs on your Altima is a beginner-friendly job. You’ll access the bulbs from inside the trunk by moving the trunk trim aside, then twist the bulb sockets out of the taillight housings.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before touching any bulb sockets.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear taillight bulbs - Left: Qty: 1, Right: Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Altima on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the trunk fully and remove loose cargo from the rear corners.
  • Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
  • A trim clip removal tool is a flat pry tool used to pop plastic clips out without breaking them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and find the rear trim clips

  • Use the shop light to look at the trunk liner behind the left taillight.
  • Locate the plastic push clips holding the trunk side trim in place.
  • The taillight bulb sockets sit behind this trim panel.

Step 2: Remove the left-side trunk trim clips

  • Use the trim clip removal tool to gently pry out the plastic clips from the left rear trunk liner.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use needle-nose pliers to grip the center pin and pull it outward carefully.
  • Pull the trunk liner back just enough to reach the taillight bulb sockets.
  • Do not crease the liner.

Step 3: Identify the taillight bulb socket

  • Use the shop light to view the bulb sockets on the back of the taillight housing.
  • The taillight bulb socket is the socket connected to the rear running light circuit.
  • A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the taillight housing.

Step 4: Remove the left taillight bulb socket

  • Grip the taillight bulb socket by hand while wearing clean nitrile gloves.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
  • No torque spec applies; the socket is hand-tight only.

Step 5: Replace the left taillight bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand while wearing clean nitrile gloves.
  • Push the new rear taillight bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • If the bulb is a wedge-style bulb, it only pushes in; do not twist it.
  • Handle only the plastic base.

Step 6: Reinstall the left taillight bulb socket

  • Insert the socket back into the taillight housing by hand.
  • Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Make sure the socket sits flat and does not wiggle.
  • No torque spec applies; the socket locks by hand.

Step 7: Repeat on the right side

  • Use the trim clip removal tool to remove the right-side trunk trim clips.
  • Use the shop light to locate the right taillight bulb socket.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out while wearing clean nitrile gloves.
  • Push the new rear taillight bulb fully into the socket.
  • Reinstall the socket and turn it clockwise until it locks.

Step 8: Test both taillights before closing the trim

  • Turn the headlight switch to the parking light or headlight position.
  • Walk to the rear and confirm both taillights glow evenly.
  • If one does not work, turn the lights off and use clean nitrile gloves to remove and reseat that bulb.
  • Test before reinstalling clips.

Step 9: Reinstall the trunk trim

  • Push the trunk liner back into its original position by hand.
  • Reinstall each plastic clip by pressing it into place by hand.
  • If needed, use needle-nose pliers to align a clip before pushing it in.
  • Do not overtighten or force clips; no torque spec applies.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn on the parking lights and verify both rear taillights work.
  • ✅ Press the brake pedal and verify brake lights still work correctly.
  • ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and verify rear turn signal operation.
  • ✅ Check that the trunk liner is secure and no clips are missing.
  • ✅ No scan tool, programming, or reset is required.
