🔧 Taillight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both taillight bulbs on your Prius V is a simple rear-lamp service. You’ll access the bulbs from inside the cargo area, remove the socket, swap the bulbs, and reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the power off and keep the vehicle in Park.
  • Let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Use a clean glove or cloth when handling new bulbs. Finger oils can shorten bulb life.
  • Do not force the lamp socket. It should twist out smoothly.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear hatch.
  • Make sure the exterior lights are switched off.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access area

  • Open the hatch and move any cargo out of the way.
  • Use your hands to remove the small trim cover behind the taillight access area in the cargo side trim.
  • Keep the cover clips in place.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket

  • Reach behind the taillight assembly and locate the bulb socket.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • If the trim blocks access, use a trim panel tool to gently loosen the panel.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new bulb into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Do not touch the glass if the bulb has a glass envelope. Use gloves.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Align the socket tabs with the housing.
  • Twist the socket clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure it sits firmly and evenly.

Step 5: Test the light

  • Turn the parking lights on and check the repaired taillight.
  • Check both sides to confirm they are working.
  • If one side still does not work, recheck the bulb orientation and socket fit.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both taillights illuminate evenly.
  • Check brake lights and turn signals if they share the same rear lamp assembly.
  • Reinstall any trim covers you removed.
