🔧 Cruze - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove each taillight housing from inside the trunk, swap the bulb(s), then reinstall the housing and test the lights. This is usually straightforward, but go slow to avoid breaking the plastic lamp or dropping hardware inside the trunk panels.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Replacing the outer tail/brake bulbs on both left and right taillights (not the center high-mount stop lamp).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on bulbs.
  • ⚠️ If any bulb was recently on, let it cool 5-10 minutes.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch glass bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the taillight housing as you remove it so it doesn’t fall and crack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small pick tool
  • Flashlight
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range) (specialty)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear tail/brake light bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Turn the light switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight fasteners (inside trunk)

  • Use a flashlight to find the trunk trim behind the taillight area.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop open/remove the access cover or pull the trunk liner back enough to reach the taillight studs/nuts.

Step 2: Remove the taillight housing

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the taillight retaining nuts (typically 2-3 nuts).
  • Place the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t get lost.
  • With one hand supporting the lamp from outside, gently pull the taillight housing straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—don’t pry on the painted body. Slow steady pull beats force.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb socket(s) on the back of the housing.
  • Twist the correct socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
  • If the connector tab is tight, use a small pick tool carefully to help lift the lock tab (do not stab the wires).
  • “Bulb socket” = the plastic holder the bulb locks into.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (or twist slightly if it’s a twist-lock style).
  • Install the new bulb fully into the socket.
  • Do not touch the glass portion of the bulb; use nitrile gloves.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and taillight housing

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Align the housing locating pins with the body grommets, then press the housing straight in until it seats evenly.
  • Reinstall the nuts using the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
  • If you have a low-range torque wrench, tighten evenly: Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs).
  • Reposition the trunk liner and snap the access cover back in using the plastic trim removal tool.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1-5 for the opposite taillight.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the parking lights ON and confirm both taillights illuminate.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights get brighter.
  • Check turn signals and reverse lights to ensure you didn’t disturb other sockets.
  • Confirm the taillight housings sit flush and the trunk weather seal isn’t pinched.
