🔧 Equinox - Taillight Bulb Replacement

You’ll be removing each rear light assembly from the body, then swapping the bulbs in the sockets and reinstalling the assemblies. This applies to the main outer taillights on both sides of your Equinox.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30–45 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🛑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working on the lights.
  • 🛑 Let someone know you’re working around the rear of the vehicle so they don’t move it accidentally.
  • 🛑 Avoid touching glass bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🧰 Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • 🧰 Small flathead screwdriver 4mm
  • 🧰 Work light or flashlight
  • 🧰 Clean gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔩 Rear outer tail/brake/turn light bulbs (dual‑filament) - Qty: 2 (replace both sides)
  • 🔩 Rear reverse light bulbs - Qty: 2 (optional but recommended while you’re there)
  • 🔩 Dielectric grease for bulb sockets - Qty: 1 small tube
  • 🔩 Replacement taillight housing clips - Qty: 2–4 (optional, in case any break)

Check HowToo or your owner’s manual for exact bulb type numbers.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Open the rear liftgate fully so you can see the side taillights.
  • Make sure the vehicle is off and in Park with the parking brake set.
  • Lay a towel or blanket on the bumper to protect paint from dropped tools or the lamp housing.
  • If you have a helper, ask them to be ready later to press the brake pedal so you can confirm the lights work.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight screws

  • Open the liftgate so you can see the inner edge of the taillight where it meets the body.
  • Locate the two black Phillips screws on the inner vertical edge of the taillight (one near the top, one near the bottom).
  • Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to loosen and remove both screws. Set them aside in a small tray so they don’t roll away.
  • Torque when reinstalling: Tighten screws gently to about 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) — just snug, don’t over-tighten.

Step 2: Release and remove the taillight housing

  • The taillight is still held by alignment pins that push into clips in the body.
  • Place one hand on the outer edge of the taillight and the other on the inner edge.
  • Pull the taillight straight rearward away from the vehicle. Use a gentle wiggling motion.
  • If it feels stuck, use the trim removal tool between the inner edge of the taillight and body and gently pry straight back. Do not pry sideways.
  • Once the pins release, carefully pull the housing back just enough to access the wiring and bulb sockets.

Step 3: Identify the bulb sockets

  • On the back of the taillight housing you’ll see round plastic bulb sockets with wires going to them.
  • Typically, the upper socket is the main tail/brake/turn bulb and the lower socket is the reverse bulb.
  • Make a quick note or photo of which socket is which before you remove them. Photos help beginners a lot.

Step 4: Remove the bulb sockets

  • Choose one socket at a time so you don’t mix them up.
  • Grasp the first socket firmly and rotate it about a quarter turn counterclockwise.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the taillight housing.
  • Repeat for the other socket if you’re replacing both bulbs.

Step 5: Remove the old bulbs

  • For each socket, gently push the bulb inward (if it’s a push-and-turn style) and twist it counterclockwise, or simply pull it straight out if it’s a push-in type.
  • If it’s tight, use the small flathead screwdriver 4mm very gently at the base of the bulb to help pry, but do not damage the socket.
  • Discard old bulbs; don’t reuse them.

Step 6: Install the new bulbs

  • Put on your clean gloves so you don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers.
  • Lightly apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the metal contacts on the bulb base. This helps prevent corrosion.
  • Insert the new bulb into the socket:
    • Push-in type: line up the pins and push straight in until it clicks or feels firmly seated.
    • Push-and-turn type: insert, push in gently, then rotate clockwise to lock.
  • Repeat for the other bulb in the second socket.

Step 7: Reinstall bulb sockets into taillight housing

  • Line up the tabs on the socket with the slots in the taillight housing opening.
  • Insert the socket fully into the housing opening.
  • Twist the socket clockwise about a quarter turn with your hand until it stops and feels snug. Hand-tight only.
  • Repeat for the other socket.

Step 8: Test the bulbs before refitting the housing

  • Let the taillight housing hang supported by one hand or rest it gently on the towel-covered bumper so there is no strain on the wires.
  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
  • Turn on the parking lights/headlights and confirm the tail lights are glowing.
  • Have a helper press the brake pedal: confirm the brake portion lights brightly.
  • Turn on the left and right turn signals: confirm each side flashes correctly.
  • Shift briefly into Reverse (with parking brake firmly set and foot on brake) to check the reverse light, then back to Park.
  • Turn ignition off again before continuing.

Step 9: Reinstall the taillight housing

  • Align the alignment pins on the back of the taillight with the holes/clips in the body.
  • Hold the housing straight and push it forward into place until you feel the pins snap into the clips.
  • Make sure the edges sit flush with the body and the liftgate opening.

Step 10: Reinstall and tighten the screws

  • Reinstall the two Phillips screws using the Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Tighten them gently until snug; do not overtighten or you can crack the plastic.
  • Torque: about 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) — this is “firm snug” by hand.

Step 11: Repeat for the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–10 for the taillight on the other side of your Equinox.
  • Always replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Walk around the rear of the vehicle and confirm:
    • Both tail lights (with parking lights on).
    • Both brake lights.
    • Both rear turn signals.
    • Both reverse lights (with someone holding the brake and briefly in Reverse).
  • Check that the taillight housings sit evenly and there are no gaps.
  • Make sure there are no “bulb out” warnings on your dash (if equipped).
  • Clean any fingerprints or smudges off the lenses with a soft cloth.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60–$120 (parts + labor for both sides)

DIY Cost: $10–$30 (parts only, depending on bulb type)

You Save: $30–$90 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3–0.5 hours.
