🔧 Taillight Bulbs - Replacement

Your Silverado uses rear lamp bulbs that service the tail, stop, and turn functions. Replacing both sides at the same time keeps the light output even and avoids a second teardown later.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the light switch off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool before touching them. Halogen bulbs get very hot.
  • Use a clean glove or the bulb base when installing. Do not touch the glass.
  • Work carefully around the tail lamp housing so the plastic tabs do not break.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Put the transmission in Park.
  • Open the tailgate for better access to the lamp screws.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use a 7mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the two tail lamp screws on the lamp housing.
  • Keep the screws in a small tray.

Step 2: Release the tail lamp assembly

  • Use a trim panel tool or your hand to gently pull the tail lamp straight back.
  • Work it out of the locating pins without twisting hard.
  • Set the lamp on a soft towel so the lens does not get scratched.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
  • The rear bulb on this truck is a 3157K style bulb.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new 3157K bulb into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Do not touch the glass part of the bulb with bare fingers.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Align the lamp assembly with the body and press it into place.
  • Use the 7mm socket to reinstall the two screws.
  • Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps for the opposite tail lamp.
  • Make sure both bulbs are seated the same way.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn on the parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals to confirm both sides work.
  • Check that the tail lamps sit flush with the body.
  • If a bulb does not light, remove the socket and reseat the bulb.
