🔧 Grand Cherokee - Taillight Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the rear taillight bulbs on your Grand Cherokee. The liftgate-mounted and outer rear lamp areas use different access points, so work slowly and keep track of the bulb sockets as you remove them.

- ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before removing any bulb sockets.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground.
- Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Turn the headlamp switch to Off.
- Open the liftgate for better access to the rear lamp housings.
- A trim panel removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to remove clips without scratching panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to fully open the liftgate.
- Make sure the liftgate is stable before working near the rear lamps.
- Use safety glasses to protect your eyes from dust or clips.
Step 2: Remove the Rear Lamp Access Cover
- Look at the inside edge of the taillight area near the liftgate opening.
- Use the trim panel removal tool or small flathead screwdriver to gently pry off the small access cover.
- If screws are present, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove them.
- Go slow to avoid cracked plastic.
Step 3: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Find the taillight bulb socket behind the access opening.
- Use your gloved hand to grip the socket body.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the taillight housing.
Step 4: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to hold the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket if it is a push-in style.
- If the bulb uses a twist-lock base, press in slightly and turn counterclockwise, then remove it.
- Use a clean microfiber towel if the bulb is difficult to grip.
Step 5: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new bulb.
- Push the new bulb firmly into the socket until fully seated.
- If it is a twist-lock bulb, align the pins, press in gently, and turn clockwise until it locks.
- Do not force the bulb. If it does not fit, remove it and realign it.
- Never touch glass with bare fingers.
Step 6: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your gloved hand to insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
- Align the socket tabs with the housing slots.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- No torque spec applies; hand-tight only.
Step 7: Test the First Taillight
- Turn the headlamp switch to the parking light position.
- Check that the replaced taillight bulb illuminates.
- Turn the lights back off before continuing.
- If the bulb does not light, use the nitrile gloves to remove it and reinstall it fully.
Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side
- Move to the opposite rear lamp.
- Use the trim panel removal tool or small flathead screwdriver to remove the access cover.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver if screws are present.
- Remove the socket, replace the bulb, and reinstall the socket using the same steps.
Step 9: Reinstall Covers and Fasteners
- Use your hand to snap the access covers back into place.
- If screws were removed, use the Phillips screwdriver to reinstall them snugly.
- No torque spec applies; tighten gently by hand.
- Plastic strips easily, so do not overtighten.
✅ After Repair
- Turn on the parking lights and confirm both taillights work.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights still work.
- Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both rear turn signals flash if those bulbs were disturbed.
- Check the instrument cluster for any bulb-out warning message.
- Close the liftgate and recheck the lamp operation from behind the vehicle.
