🔧 Corolla - Taillight Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the back of each taillight from inside the trunk, twist out the bulb sockets, and swap in new bulbs. This restores proper brake/taillight and turn-signal function and helps you stay visible and legal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of incandescent bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep the trunk lid securely open while working.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim panel removal tool
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Stop/Tail light bulbs (dual-filament) - Qty: 2
- Rear turn signal bulbs (single-filament) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the light switch to OFF and remove the key.
- Open the trunk and lay a towel over the bumper edge to prevent scratches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open trunk and access the taillight area
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of the taillight assembly behind the trunk lining.
- Use a trim panel removal tool to pop out the plastic clips and fold the trunk liner back (or remove the small access cover, if equipped).
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket(s)
- Find the bulb sockets going into the back of the taillight (usually one for stop/tail and one for turn signal).
- Grip the socket, then rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t yank wires.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- If your replacement bulbs are LED and don’t light later, remove and rotate 180° (polarity matters on some LEDs).
Step 4: Reinstall the socket and repeat for the other function
- Insert the socket back into the housing, then rotate clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Repeat Steps 2–4 for the other taillight bulb on that side (stop/tail vs turn signal), if you’re replacing both.
Step 5: Replace bulbs on the other side
- Move to the other taillight and repeat Steps 1–4.
Step 6: Reinstall trunk liner / clips
- Reposition the trunk liner.
- Reinstall clips by pressing them in by hand; use the trim panel removal tool to align clips if needed.
Optional Step: If you removed the taillight housing nuts
- Some work styles involve removing the housing for easier access: use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the two 10mm nuts.
- When reinstalling, Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Don’t over-tighten; studs can crack the lens.
✅ After Repair
- Turn on parking lights: confirm both taillights glow evenly.
- Press the brake pedal: confirm both brake lights get noticeably brighter.
- Turn on hazards: confirm both rear turn signals flash at a normal speed.
- If a turn signal “hyper-flashes,” a bulb may be wrong type, not seated, or an LED needs a load resistor.
