🔧 Civic - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Civic, the left and right taillight bulbs (the bulbs that do tail/running lights and brake lights) are accessed from inside the trunk, behind the trunk side trim. You’ll pull back the liner, twist the bulb socket out, and swap the bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool if they were just on (they get hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support trunk trim gently to avoid breaking plastic clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Taillight/brake bulb (7443) - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight area inside the trunk

  • Open the trunk.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the trunk side liner behind each taillight area (left and right corners).
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic push-clips holding the liner where you need access.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a small flat-blade screwdriver (pry lightly). Pry slowly to avoid cracking clips.
  • Pull the liner back just enough to reach the bulb sockets.

Step 2: Remove the taillight bulb socket

  • Identify the taillight/brake bulb socket (usually the larger, dual-filament bulb socket).
  • Grab the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle while pulling—don’t yank the wires.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves (helps keep oils off the bulb).
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
  • Push the new taillight/brake bulb (7443) straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the taillight housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.
  • Make sure it sits flush and feels secure.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Move to the other trunk corner and repeat Steps 1–4 for the second taillight bulb.

Step 6: Reinstall the trunk liner

  • Position the liner back into place.
  • Press the push-clips back in by hand. If needed, use the trim clip removal tool to line them up first.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlight switch to ON and confirm both taillights illuminate.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights get brighter (have a helper watch, or back up near a wall to see the reflection).
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket again and reseat the bulb firmly.
