Assumption: replacing the main stop/turn/tail bulb (3157) on both sides.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the taillight so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
- Open the tailgate for easier access to both taillights.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the driver-side taillight housing
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the taillight lens (they’re on the inboard edge, near the tailgate opening).
- Gently pull the taillight housing straight back to release it from the body.
- If it’s stuck, use a trim removal tool (specialty) to gently pry at the edge. A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop clips without scratching paint.
Step 2: Remove the bulb socket
- Support the taillight with one hand.
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull the socket out of the housing.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Use a clean shop towel to hold the bulb and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new 3157 bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Optional: apply a thin film of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass). Keeps moisture out long-term.
Step 4: Reinstall the bulb socket and housing
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
- Line up the housing locating pins with the body grommets and push the housing straight in until seated flush.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snugly. Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs)
Step 5: Repeat on the passenger-side taillight
- Use the same process: remove two screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, pull housing back, twist socket out, replace 3157 bulb, reinstall.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test: parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals (left and right).
- If a bulb doesn’t work: remove the housing again and make sure the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
- Confirm both housings sit flush and don’t wiggle.
