🔧 Mustang - Taillight Bulb Replacement

On your Mustang, the rear taillight assemblies use LED lighting modules from the factory, not simple twist-out incandescent taillight bulbs. If a rear taillight, brake light, or turn signal segment has failed, the normal repair is replacing the affected rear lamp assembly or LED module, not changing a loose bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before starting so the lamp circuit is not powered.
  • ⚠️ Let the rear lamp cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is recommended when unplugging rear lamp connectors. This helps prevent short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry against painted body panels with metal tools. The paint can chip easily.
  • ⚠️ Support the lamp with one hand when removing the last nut so it does not fall and scratch the bumper.

  • Plastic pry tool
  • Torque wrench inch-pound

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Left rear taillight assembly - Qty: 1
  • Right rear taillight assembly - Qty: 1
  • Rear lamp mounting nuts - Qty: As needed

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Mustang on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the headlamp switch to OFF.
  • Open the trunk fully.
  • Use the 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. The negative cable is the black cable marked with a minus symbol.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel on the rear bumper below the lamp area to protect the paint.
  • A trim panel removal tool is a flat plastic tool used to pop clips loose without damaging interior panels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Trunk and Access the Rear Trim

  • Use your hands to lift the trunk floor cover out of the way.
  • Use the trim panel removal tool to remove the trunk side trim retainers near the taillight area.
  • Gently pull the trunk side trim back enough to see the rear lamp mounting nuts and wiring connector.
  • Work slowly; plastic clips can break.

Step 2: Unplug the Rear Lamp Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the rear lamp electrical connector.
  • Pull the connector straight back from the taillight assembly.
  • If the connector is tight, use the plastic pry tool gently near the connector body, not on the wires.
  • Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the connector housing.

Step 3: Remove the Taillight Mounting Nuts

  • Use the 8mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the rear lamp mounting nuts from inside the trunk.
  • Hold the outside of the taillight with one hand while removing the final nut.
  • Set the nuts in a safe place so they do not fall into the trunk cavity.
  • A magnetic tray helps prevent lost nuts.

Step 4: Remove the Taillight Assembly

  • Use both hands to pull the taillight assembly straight rearward from the body.
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it by hand while pulling straight back.
  • Use the plastic pry tool only if needed, and protect the paint with the microfiber towel.
  • Do not twist the lamp hard. The locating pins can crack.

Step 5: Install the New Taillight Assembly

  • Compare the new taillight assembly with the old one before installing it.
  • Make sure the sealing gasket is seated flat on the new lamp. The gasket keeps water out of the trunk.
  • Guide the new lamp into the body opening by hand.
  • Push it straight forward until the locating pins seat fully.

Step 6: Reinstall the Mounting Nuts

  • Start all rear lamp mounting nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 8mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch ratchet to snug the nuts evenly.
  • Use the inch-pound torque wrench and 8mm socket to tighten the lamp nuts to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The plastic lamp housing can crack.

Step 7: Reconnect the Wiring

  • Push the rear lamp electrical connector into the lamp until the locking tab clicks.
  • Use your fingers to lightly tug the connector to confirm it is locked.
  • Route the wiring the same way it was before removal.

Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same trim panel removal tool, 8mm socket, extension, and ratchet on the opposite side.
  • Remove the opposite taillight assembly the same way.
  • Install the new opposite taillight assembly and torque the nuts to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Replacing both keeps brightness matched.

Step 9: Reinstall Trunk Trim

  • Use your hands to place the trunk side trim back into position.
  • Use the trim panel removal tool or your fingers to press the trim retainers back into place.
  • Reinstall the trunk floor cover by hand.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use the 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the clamp snugly. Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
  • Make sure the cable does not rotate by hand after tightening.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the parking lights on and confirm both taillights illuminate evenly.
  • Press the brake pedal and confirm both brake lights work.
  • Turn on the left and right turn signals and confirm both rear signals flash normally.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and check both sides again.
  • Close the trunk and check that the lamps sit flush with the body.
  • After the next rain or car wash, inspect the trunk trim area for water leaks.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $800-$1,600+ for both rear lamp assemblies installed
