🔧 Altima - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
Replacing both tail light bulbs on your Altima means accessing the rear lamp housings from inside the trunk, removing the bulb sockets, and installing new bulbs. This is a good beginner repair because it requires only basic hand tools and helps keep your car visible and legal at night.
Assumption: This guide covers replacing the rear tail/brake light bulbs in the trunk-mounted rear lamp assemblies.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off before removing bulbs.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool for several minutes if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves or use a clean cloth when handling new bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not force the bulb socket. Plastic tabs can break if twisted the wrong way.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before touching the new bulbs.
- 📌 A trim clip removal tool is a small prying tool used to lift plastic interior clips without damaging the trunk liner.
- 📌 A bulb socket is the plastic holder that twists into the rear lamp and holds the bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Trunk
- Use your hand to open the trunk fully.
- Use a flashlight to look at the left and right side trunk trim panels behind the tail light areas.
- Locate the carpeted trunk liner panels near the back corners.
Step 2: Remove the Trunk Trim Clips
- Use the trim clip removal tool to gently pry out the plastic trunk liner clips on one side.
- If a clip is tight, use the 1/4 inch flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the center of the clip first.
- Pull the carpeted trunk liner back just enough to reach the rear lamp bulb sockets.
- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 3: Identify the Tail/Brake Light Socket
- Use the flashlight to locate the bulb socket in the back of the lamp assembly.
- The tail/brake light socket is usually the larger socket in the rear lamp area.
- Do not unplug or twist other sockets unless you are replacing those bulbs too.
Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to grip the plastic bulb socket firmly.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Use the shop towel if the socket is slippery.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to hold the socket.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket unless the replacement bulb style requires a slight push-and-turn motion.
- Check the socket for melting, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- If the socket is melted or green with corrosion, the socket may also need replacement.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves or a clean shop towel to handle the new rear tail/brake light bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Make sure it sits squarely and does not wobble.
- Do not touch glass with bare fingers.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to insert the socket back into the lamp housing.
- Line up the socket tabs with the matching slots in the lamp.
- Twist the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- No torque spec applies; this is hand-tight only.
Step 8: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the trim clip removal tool to release the opposite trunk liner clips.
- Use the flashlight to locate the opposite tail/brake light socket.
- Remove the socket by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
- Replace the bulb using nitrile gloves.
- Reinstall the socket by turning it clockwise until locked.
Step 9: Test Both Bulbs Before Reinstalling Trim
- Use your hand to turn the exterior lights on and confirm both tail lights illuminate.
- Press the brake pedal or have a helper press it to confirm both brake lights brighten.
- If one bulb does not work, turn the lights off, remove that bulb with nitrile gloves, rotate/reseat it, and test again.
Step 10: Reinstall the Trunk Liner
- Use your hands to move the carpeted trunk liner back into its original position.
- Push the plastic trim clips back into place by hand.
- If needed, use the flat-blade screwdriver 1/4 inch to gently guide the clip center flush.
- Make sure the liner is secure and not blocking the trunk hinge movement.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both tail lights work with the parking lights on.
- ✅ Confirm both brake lights brighten when the brake pedal is pressed.
- ✅ Confirm no bulb warning message appears on the dash.
- ✅ Close the trunk and verify the lamps still work after closing.
- ✅ No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required.
