🔧 Highlander - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the rear tail light bulbs on your Highlander. You’ll access the bulbs from the rear lamp housings at the liftgate area, remove the bulb sockets, swap the bulbs, and test the lights before closing everything up.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground and switch the ignition OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on; small bulbs can get hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch glass bulb surfaces with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

- 💡 Turn the headlight switch OFF.
- 🔑 Remove the key or keep the smart key away from the vehicle.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before touching the new bulbs.
- 📌 A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps pop covers loose without scratching the interior trim.
- 📌 Dielectric grease is a non-conductive moisture barrier used lightly on bulb socket seals, not smeared on the metal contacts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Liftgate
- Use your hand to open the rear liftgate fully.
- Use safety glasses while working around the rear lamp area.
- Locate the tail light assemblies on the left and right rear corners of your Highlander.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Light Access Cover or Lamp Fasteners
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pry off the small rear lamp access cover if equipped.
- If the lamp housing needs to move outward for access, use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the visible lamp retaining bolts near the liftgate opening.
- Set the bolts aside on a clean microfiber towel so they do not roll away.
- Work slowly to avoid scratching paint.
Step 3: Pull the Tail Light Housing Rearward
- Use both hands to pull the tail light housing straight rearward from the body.
- Do not twist the housing; it uses alignment pins that release straight back.
- If it feels stuck, use the plastic trim removal tool carefully at the edge while pulling by hand.
- Support the housing so the wiring is not stretched.
Step 4: Remove the Tail Light Bulb Socket
- Find the tail light bulb socket on the back of the lamp housing.
- Use your hand to rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling by hand.
- Inspect the socket for melting, corrosion, or loose terminals.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new rear tail light bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the bulb if your fingers touched the glass.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the rubber socket seal if the seal looks dry.
- Do not pack grease into the electrical contacts.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail light housing by hand.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks.
- Make sure the socket sits flat against the housing seal.
Step 8: Reinstall the Tail Light Housing
- Align the tail light housing guide pins with the body openings by hand.
- Push the housing straight forward until it sits flush with the body.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the retaining bolts.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Use the plastic trim removal tool or your hand to snap the access cover back into place if removed.
Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and steps on the opposite rear tail light.
- Replace both rear tail light bulbs as a pair so brightness matches side to side.
- Matching bulbs look better and last evenly.
Step 10: Test the Lights
- Use your hand to turn the headlight switch to the parking light or headlight position.
- Check both rear tail lights for even brightness.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights still work correctly.
- Turn on the hazard lights and confirm the rear turn signals still work if the housing was disturbed.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Make sure both tail light housings sit flush against the body.
- ✅ Confirm no warning lights or bulb-out messages appear.
- ✅ Check the rear lamps again at night or in shade to verify both bulbs are equally bright.
- ✅ Dispose of old bulbs safely; do not leave broken glass in the cargo area.
