🔧 Tucson - Tail Light Bulb Replacement

- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth when handling bulbs; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tucson on level ground.
- Move the transmission to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- Open the rear hatch fully so you can access both tail lamp assemblies.
- A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Rear Hatch
- Lift the rear hatch fully.
- Stand behind your Tucson and look at the inner edge of each tail lamp assembly.
- You should see retaining screws along the hatch-side edge of the lamp.
Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the driver-side tail lamp assembly.
- Place the screws somewhere safe so they do not roll away.
- Repeat this on the passenger-side tail lamp assembly.
- Tip: Take a phone photo first.
Step 3: Pull the Tail Lamp Assembly Straight Back
- Use both hands to gently pull the driver-side tail lamp assembly straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool at the outer edge to gently help release the alignment pins.
- Do not twist the lamp hard; the plastic guide pins can crack.
- Repeat this on the passenger side.
Step 4: Locate the Tail Light Bulb Socket
- Look at the back of the removed tail lamp assembly.
- Find the tail light bulb socket. The socket is the plastic holder that twists into the lamp housing.
- Use your hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves before touching the bulb.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket if it is a wedge-style bulb.
- If the bulb has locking pins, press it inward slightly and turn it counterclockwise to release it.
- Use a clean microfiber cloth if the bulb is difficult to grip.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to handle the new tail light bulb.
- Install the new bulb into the socket the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure it is fully seated and straight.
- Tip: Do not touch glass with bare fingers.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise by hand until it locks in place.
- Do not use pliers; hand-tight is correct for this plastic socket.
Step 8: Test the New Bulbs
- Before reinstalling the tail lamp assemblies, turn the parking lights on.
- Check that both new tail light bulbs illuminate.
- Press the brake pedal and confirm the brake lights work if the same bulb also handles brake-light function.
- Turn the lights back off after testing.
Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assemblies
- Align the guide pins on the tail lamp assembly with the body openings.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush with the body.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the retaining screws.
- Tighten the screws snugly by hand; do not overtighten because the lamp housing is plastic.
Step 10: Final Light Check
- Turn the parking lights on again and confirm both tail lights work.
- Check the brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and hazard lights before driving.
- Close the rear hatch securely.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both tail lamps sit flush against the body.
- ✅ Make sure no warning light is displayed on the dash.
- ✅ If one bulb does not work, remove it and check that it is fully seated in the socket.
- ✅ If the socket looks melted, corroded, or loose, replace the socket before driving at night.
