📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground, select Park, and engage the parking brake.
- 💡 Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the ignition key.
- 🚪 Open the rear liftgate and clear items away from both cargo-side trim panels.
- 📦 Keep the new bulbs in their packaging until installation.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Left Lamp Access Cover
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Locate the small lamp-service cover in the left cargo-side trim, directly behind the rear combination lamp.
- Use the small plastic trim-removal tool at the cover notch and carefully pry the cover open.
- A trim-removal tool is a thin plastic lever that releases panels without scratching them.
- Do not bend the cover farther than necessary.
Step 2: Identify the Left Tail/Brake Bulb Socket
- Use the nitrile mechanic gloves to locate the tail/brake bulb socket through the opening.
- Select the socket for the dual-filament tail/brake bulb. Do not remove the turn-signal or reverse-light socket.
- The correct bulb has two electrical filaments and operates as both the dim tail lamp and bright brake lamp.
Step 3: Remove the Left Bulb
- Grip the socket with the nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise approximately one-quarter turn, then pull it straight out of the lamp housing.
- Pull the old 7443 bulb straight out of the socket. Do not twist the bulb.
- No fasteners are removed, so no torque specification applies.
Step 4: Install the New Left Bulb
- Using the nitrile mechanic gloves, align the new 7443 bulb with the socket and press it straight in until fully seated.
- If the glass is accidentally touched, clean it with the clean microfiber cloth before installation.
- Insert the socket into the lamp housing and turn it clockwise until it stops securely.
- Never force a bulb or socket into place.
Step 5: Replace the Right Bulb
- Move to the right cargo-side trim and use the small plastic trim-removal tool to open its lamp-service cover.
- Using the nitrile mechanic gloves, turn the tail/brake bulb socket counterclockwise and remove it.
- Pull the old bulb straight out. Press the second new 7443 bulb fully into the socket.
- Reinstall the socket and turn it clockwise until secure.
- No fasteners are removed, so no torque specification applies.
Step 6: Refit the Access Covers
- Use the nitrile mechanic gloves to align each access cover with its opening.
- Press around each cover by hand until every retaining tab sits flush with the cargo trim.
- Use the small plastic trim-removal tool only if a cover edge needs gentle alignment.
✅ After Repair
- 💡 Switch on the parking lights and confirm both new bulbs illuminate at equal, low brightness.
- 🛑 Have a helper press the brake pedal and confirm both bulbs become noticeably brighter.
- 🔍 Check that neither bulb flickers and that both access covers remain secure.
- ♻️ Dispose of the old incandescent bulbs according to local Sonīpat waste regulations.
