🔧 Headlight Bulb Replacement - Low Beam

Assumption: This covers both front low-beam headlight bulbs on your Corolla. On this model, the low beams are the most common “headlight bulbs” people mean.

Replacing both bulbs at the same time keeps the light output even and saves you from doing the job twice. The job is simple, but access is tight, so take your time and avoid touching the glass on the new bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching anything.
  • Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If you disconnect the battery, you may lose clock and radio settings.
  • Keep the key away from the vehicle while working so the lights do not switch on.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully locked in place before closing up the dust cover.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim panel tool
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and support it fully.
  • If one bulb is out, replace both sides together for matched brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the back of the headlight housing

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlamp assembly.
  • On this Corolla, access is usually from behind the headlight housing. You may need to move the air intake duct or washer filler neck slightly for room.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet if a small bracket or duct needs to be loosened.

Step 2: Remove the bulb cover

  • Twist the rear dust cover counterclockwise and remove it by hand.
  • If it is stuck, gently help it with a small flat-blade screwdriver, but do not pry hard.
  • Keep dirt away from the opening.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Press the tab on the bulb connector and pull it straight off the bulb.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • Note the bulb’s orientation before removing it so the new one goes in the same way.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Put on mechanic gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Turn it clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Do not force the bulb.

Step 6: Reinstall the dust cover and repeat on the other side

  • Install the rear cover and twist it clockwise until snug.
  • Repeat the same steps on the other headlight.
  • If any duct or bracket was removed, reinstall it using the 10mm socket and ratchet.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and confirm both low beams work.
  • Check the beam pattern on a wall or garage door.
  • Make sure the dust covers are seated fully to keep moisture out.
  • If one side is dim or flickers, recheck the connector connection.
