📋 Before You Begin

• 🚙 Park your Explorer on level ground and switch the ignition off.
• 💡 Rotate the lighting control to the off position.
• 🧊 Wait until both headlamp assemblies are cool.
• 📦 Open both replacement bulbs, but leave the glass protected until installation.
• 📏 Don’t turn any headlamp adjustment screws. Bulb replacement doesn’t require an aiming adjustment.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and Secure the Hood

• Pull the hood release inside the cabin, release the secondary latch, and raise the hood.
• Secure the hood fully before reaching behind either headlamp.
• Use the LED flashlight to locate the round high-beam access cover behind each headlamp assembly.

Step 2: Remove the First Access Cover

• Put on the nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• Carefully pull or turn the rear access cover as required to release it from the headlamp housing.
• Place the cover somewhere clean so dirt cannot stick to its seal.
• Work one side at a time.

Step 3: Disconnect the First Bulb

• Press the locking tab on the electrical connector with your gloved fingers.
• Pull the connector straight from the bulb’s plastic base.
• Pull on the connector body, not the wires.

Step 4: Remove the First High-Beam Bulb

• Hold the bulb by its plastic base.
• Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise until it releases.
• Pull the bulb straight rearward from the headlamp.

Step 5: Install the First New Bulb

• Remove the new bulb from its package while holding only its plastic base.
• Align the bulb’s locating tabs with the matching slots in the headlamp opening.
• Insert the bulb fully, then turn it clockwise until securely locked.
• Reconnect the electrical connector until its locking tab clicks.
• If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with 90% isopropyl alcohol and a clean microfiber cloth.

Step 6: Reinstall the First Access Cover

• Inspect the cover seal for dirt, pinching, or damage.
• Fit the access cover evenly onto the housing.
• Press or turn it securely into place by hand.

Step 7: Replace the Bulb on the Other Side

• Use the LED flashlight to locate the second high-beam access cover.
• Repeat Steps 2 through 6 with the second bulb.
• Make sure both electrical connectors and both access covers are fully seated.

Step 8: Test Both High Beams

• Remove all tools and packaging from the engine compartment.
• Switch the ignition on and activate the high beams.
• Confirm that both lamps illuminate with similar color and brightness.
• Switch the lights off before making any correction behind the headlamps.
