🔧 Pilot - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Pilot, “headlight bulbs” can mean different things depending on whether you have a halogen bulb (twist-out bulb you can replace) or an LED headlight (an LED module that typically isn’t a replaceable bulb). We’ll confirm which type you have, then replace the left and right side bulbs the safe way.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let them cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you must unplug any large headlamp connector, turn ignition OFF first.
- ⚠️ If your Pilot has LED low beams, the “bulb” usually isn’t serviceable; replacing the wrong part wastes money.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip remover
- Phillips screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Needle-nose pliers
- Torque wrench (inch-pound or small ft-lb range)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs (Left + Right) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb - Replace in pairs (Left + Right) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp for a round dust cap and a twist-lock bulb socket.
- Quick check (important): If there is no replaceable bulb/socket for the low beam (often LED), stop and tell me which light is out (low beam or high beam). LED low beam assemblies typically require headlamp assembly/module repair, not a bulb.
- If access is tight, be ready to move small items like the intake snorkel or washer filler neck using a 10mm socket and trim clip remover.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which “bulb” you’re replacing (low beam vs high beam)
- Turn the headlight switch ON (engine can stay OFF) and verify what’s out: low beam or high beam.
- Turn all lights OFF.
- Behind the headlamp, remove the rubber/plastic dust cap by hand (if equipped).
- Read the bulb type printed on the bulb base or socket label using a flashlight.
- Match the new bulb type exactly.
Step 2: Create working room (only if needed)
- If the washer filler neck blocks access, gently pull it upward to unclip it (use needle-nose pliers only if a clip is stubborn).
- If the air intake duct/snorkel blocks access, loosen clamps/bolts with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then move it aside.
- If you removed any 10mm bolts, reinstall them later to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the electrical connector
- Press the connector tab with your thumb and pull straight back.
- If it’s stuck, gently wiggle while pulling—do not yank the wires.
Step 4: Remove the halogen bulb (twist-lock style)
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise (usually about 1/8 to 1/4 turn) by hand and pull it straight out.
- Keep the old bulb as a reference for the locking tabs.
Step 5: Install the new halogen bulb
- Without touching the glass, align the bulb tabs with the housing slots and insert fully.
- Twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb glass).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall dust cap and any moved components
- Reinstall the dust cap by hand, making sure it’s fully seated to keep moisture out.
- Reinstall intake duct/fasteners using a 10mm socket, then Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Re-clip the washer filler neck back into place.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–6 for the other headlight.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for color match.
Step 8: If your low beam is LED (no replaceable bulb)
- If you cannot find a twist-out bulb/socket for the low beam, stop here.
- Tell me: (1) which function is out (low or high), and (2) what the back of the headlamp shows (a removable bulb socket or a sealed LED module/large connector).
- LED low-beam repairs typically involve the headlamp assembly or LED driver/module, not a bulb swap.
âś… After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and verify both left and right lights work on low beam and high beam.
- Check that dust caps are fully seated (prevents fogging/condensation).
- At night, confirm the beam pattern looks even; if it’s wildly off, a bulb may not be seated/locked.
