🔧 Traverse - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Traverse restores safe nighttime visibility and keeps the light color even from side to side. On this model, the low-beam/high-beam headlamp bulbs are serviced from behind the headlamp housings, inside the engine bay.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before touching the headlamp area.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is not normally required, but keep the headlight switch OFF while working.
- ⚠️ Work on level ground with the transmission in Park and the parking brake set.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Safety glasses

Note: Replace both bulbs together so the brightness and color match.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Traverse on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 💡 Turn the headlight switch fully OFF.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
- 🔍 Open the hood and use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp housing.
- 📌 A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool used to lift plastic push clips without breaking them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Headlamp Backs
- Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlamp housing first.
- Find the round bulb access cover or rear bulb connector at the back of the headlamp.
- Work one side at a time.
Step 2: Create Working Room if Needed
- If the air duct or plastic cover blocks access, use a trim clip removal tool to lift the plastic retaining clips.
- If a 10mm fastener is present, use a 10mm socket, 1/4 inch drive ratchet, and 6 inch extension to remove it.
- Move only the cover or ducting needed to reach the bulb. Do not pull hard on wiring.
- Set clips and bolts in a cup so they do not get lost.
Step 3: Remove the Rear Bulb Cover
- Use your gloved hand to turn the rear headlamp access cover counterclockwise.
- If the cover is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4 inch gently at the edge to help start it.
- Remove the cover and place it somewhere clean.
- Check the rubber seal on the cover. It must go back on fully to keep moisture out.
Step 4: Disconnect the Old Bulb
- Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
- Pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
- If it feels stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4 inch to gently help release the tab.
- Do not pull on the wires themselves.
Step 5: Remove the Old Headlight Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the bulb counterclockwise until it unlocks.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Look at the tabs on the old bulb so you understand how the new bulb locks in.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 6: Install the New Headlight Bulb
- Put on clean nitrile gloves before opening the new bulb package.
- Hold the new bulb by the plastic base only.
- Insert the new bulb into the headlamp housing with the tabs lined up.
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks firmly in place.
- No torque spec applies because this bulb locks by hand pressure only.
Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the new bulb until the locking tab clicks.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the connector is fully seated and straight.
- Gently tug the connector body, not the wires, to confirm it is locked.
Step 8: Reinstall the Rear Bulb Cover
- Place the rear access cover back onto the headlamp housing.
- Use your hand to rotate it clockwise until it is fully seated.
- Make sure the cover seal is even all the way around to prevent condensation inside the headlamp.
Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same steps on the passenger-side headlamp.
- If access is tighter, use the flashlight and 6 inch extension carefully around the surrounding components.
- Replace the second bulb the same way so both sides match.
Step 10: Reinstall Any Removed Covers or Ducting
- Reposition any air duct or plastic cover removed earlier.
- Use the trim clip removal tool handle or your fingers to press plastic clips back into place.
- If 10mm bolts were removed, use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to reinstall them snugly.
- Torque small 10mm cover fasteners to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) if applicable.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the headlights ON and confirm both new bulbs work.
- ✅ Check low beams and high beams if the replaced bulb serves both functions.
- ✅ Walk around the front of your Traverse and confirm both lights look even.
- ✅ If one bulb does not turn on, switch the headlights OFF and recheck the connector lock.
- ✅ After the first rainy drive or car wash, check for moisture inside the headlamp lens.
