🔧 Headlight Bulb Replacement - Front Bulb Replacement

Replacing the headlight bulbs on your Tacoma is a straightforward job from the engine bay. On the SR, you typically access the bulbs from behind the headlamp housing, so there’s usually no need to remove the bumper or headlight assembly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlight switch off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Work with the ignition off and keys removed.
  • If you have access issues, disconnect the negative battery cable before starting.
  • Assumption: this procedure is for both low-beam bulbs.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Flat-blade trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Let the bulbs cool if the lights were just on.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the rear of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlamp housing.
  • If a cover or intake tube blocks access, use the flat-blade trim tool to remove only the blocking piece.
  • Torque: No fasteners removed in this step.

Step 2: Remove the old bulb

  • Pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb.
  • Use your hand to rotate the bulb counterclockwise and remove it from the housing.
  • Do not force it.
  • Torque: No fasteners removed in this step.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Rotate it clockwise by hand until it seats firmly.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Torque: No fasteners removed in this step.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same process for the second bulb.
  • Compare both sides so the bulbs sit fully locked in place.
  • Torque: No fasteners removed in this step.

Step 5: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall any covers or intake parts you removed.
  • Close the hood.
  • Turn on the headlights and confirm both bulbs work on low beam.
  • Check the beam pattern against a wall.
  • Torque: No fasteners removed in this step.

✅ After Repair

  • Test low beams, high beams, and turn signals if they were moved during access.
  • Make sure both headlights are aimed evenly.
  • If one bulb does not light, recheck the connector lock and bulb seating.
