🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs restores nighttime visibility and keeps the beam pattern even from side to side. On your Equinox, access is tight, so work slowly and avoid touching the glass on the new bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- Let the bulbs cool down before touching the housings.
- Do not touch the glass of halogen bulbs with bare hands; skin oil shortens bulb life.
- If your Equinox uses HID/xenon bulbs instead of halogen, the low-beam procedure is different and should be handled carefully.
- Battery disconnect is not required for a basic bulb swap, but keep the ignition off.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access to the back of each headlamp
- Use a 7mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper air intake duct fasteners on the driver side if they block access.
- Use a 8mm socket and ratchet to remove any nearby retaining bolts that block the rear of the headlamp area.
- Use a trim panel tool to release any push clips that are in the way.
- Work gently to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the bulb connector
- Reach behind the headlamp housing and locate the electrical connector.
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
- If it is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully on the lock tab only.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand, or release the retaining clip if your bulb uses one.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the housing.
- Compare the old bulb to the new one before installing.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Insert the new bulb into the headlamp housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Twist the socket clockwise by hand until it locks, or reconnect the retaining clip if equipped.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 5: Test the light
- Turn the headlight switch on and confirm the new bulb works.
- Check low beam and high beam operation if you replaced both bulbs.
Step 6: Reinstall access components
- Reinstall any air duct, bolts, and clips removed earlier using the 7mm socket, 8mm socket, and trim panel tool.
- Make sure nothing is left loose in the engine bay.
✅ After Repair
- Park facing a wall and check that both beams point evenly.
- Verify the headlights are bright and there is no flicker.
- If one side does not work, recheck the connector lock and bulb seating.
