🔧 Escape - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both low/high beam headlight bulbs on your Escape is a beginner-friendly job. The bulbs twist out from the back of each headlamp housing, so you do not need to remove the bumper or headlight assembly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition completely off before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes if the headlights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves. Oil from your fingers can shorten halogen bulb life.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Use your hand to release the safety latch at the front of the hood.
- Lift the hood and support it with the hood prop rod if equipped.
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of the driver-side headlight housing.
Step 2: Locate the Driver-Side Headlight Bulb
- Use the flashlight to look for the bulb connector on the back of the headlight housing.
- The connector is the small plastic plug attached to the bulb wiring.
- The bulb sits in the rear of the housing and locks in with a short twist.
- Take a photo before unplugging.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the connector.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently press the tab.
- Pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Old Driver-Side Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to grip the bulb base.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
- No fastener torque is used for this bulb. It locks by hand.
Step 5: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves and hold the new H11 bulb by the plastic base only.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber towel.
- Insert the bulb into the headlight housing, matching the tabs to the slots.
- Turn the bulb clockwise until it stops and feels locked.
- Do not force it. The bulb should seat smoothly.
Step 6: Reconnect the Driver-Side Connector
- Use your hand to push the electrical connector onto the new bulb.
- Listen or feel for a small click from the locking tab.
- Lightly tug the connector by the plastic body to confirm it is locked.
Step 7: Replace the Passenger-Side Bulb
- Move to the passenger side of your Escape.
- Use the flashlight to locate the bulb connector behind the passenger-side headlight housing.
- Use your fingers or a small flathead screwdriver to release the connector tab.
- Pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
- Use your gloved hand to turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the old bulb straight out.
- Install the new H11 bulb by lining up the tabs and turning it clockwise until it locks.
- Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
Step 8: Test the Headlights
- Use your hand to turn the headlight switch to ON.
- Check that both headlights are working.
- Use the high-beam switch to confirm the beam function works normally.
- If one side does not light, turn the switch OFF and recheck the connector.
Step 9: Final Check
- Use the flashlight to make sure both bulbs are fully seated.
- Check that no wiring is pinched or loose.
- Close the hood securely.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Park about 25 feet from a wall at night and confirm both beams look even.
- ✅ If one beam looks much higher or lower, the bulb may not be seated fully.
- ✅ No scan tool, programming, or infotainment reset is required.
- ✅ Dispose of the old halogen bulbs safely. Do not leave glass bulbs loose in the trash.
