🔧 Soul - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs from under the hood. On your Soul, the bulbs lock into the back of the headlight housing with a twist-lock, so no bumper removal is normally needed.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: your Soul uses halogen dual-beam H13/9008 bulbs (most Base models).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let headlights cool fully before touching the housing or bulb.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets.
🔧 Required Tools

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb (halogen H13/9008) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift into 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If you need extra hand room, remove the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight housing
- Open the hood and locate the back of each headlight assembly (left and right).
- Use a flashlight to spot the bulb connector and the round rear dust cap (if equipped).
Step 2: Remove the dust cap (if equipped)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Twist the cap counterclockwise by hand and pull it off.
- Tip: Set the cap where it stays clean.
Step 3: Unplug the electrical connector
- Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight rearward.
- If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t pull on the wires.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the connector (a thin smear only).
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grip the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter-turn to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
- Tip: Note the bulb’s tab positions for reinstall.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- Still wearing nitrile gloves, insert the new bulb into the housing with the tabs aligned.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks fully in place.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with alcohol and a lint-free towel before installing.
Step 6: Reconnect and reseal
- Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
- Reinstall the dust cap by twisting it clockwise until snug.
- If you removed the battery cable, reconnect it using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug, do not over-tighten).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–6 for the other headlight.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for equal brightness.
Step 8: If access is tight (optional clearance move)
- If your hands don’t fit well, remove nearby plastic clips/ducting using a trim clip removal tool.
- Reinstall all clips fully after the bulbs are replaced.
✅ After Repair
- Start the car and switch headlights ON to confirm both sides work on low and high beam.
- Walk in front of the car and verify both beams match in color and brightness.
- If one doesn’t light, turn lights OFF and recheck the connector is fully clicked in.
