🔧 Cherokee - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the left and right headlight bulbs by accessing the back of each headlamp through the front wheel-well liner. This is common on your Cherokee because the bulbs sit behind the headlamp housing with limited under-hood access.
Assumption: Your Cherokee uses halogen low-beam bulbs (common on this trim). If yours has factory HID/LED, the access is similar but the bulb/module style differs.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes; hot bulbs can burn you.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for standard halogen bulb replacement.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Turn the steering wheel to give access: full left for the right bulb, full right for the left bulb.
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open up wheel-well access
- Turn the steering wheel to create space at the front of the wheel well.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push clips along the front edge of the fender liner.
- Use a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" socket extension to remove the small liner screws (if equipped).
- Pull the front portion of the liner back enough to reach the rear of the headlamp.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) for the small liner screws during reassembly.
- Tip: A flashlight makes this much easier.
Step 2: Remove the dust cap (if equipped)
- Behind the headlamp, locate the round plastic dust cap on the low-beam bulb area.
- Remove it by turning it counterclockwise by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip).
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Find the bulb base and wiring connector.
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb (use nitrile gloves).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull it straight out.
- Tip: Don’t force it; it should unlock smoothly.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the glass.
- Line up the bulb tabs with the housing slots and insert the bulb fully.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise to lock it in place.
- Reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean alcohol wipe and let it dry.
Step 5: Reinstall the dust cap and fender liner
- Reinstall the dust cap (turn clockwise by hand until snug).
- Push the fender liner back into position.
- Reinstall liner screws using a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
- Reinstall the push clips with the trim clip removal tool (use it to press them in squarely).
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) for the small liner screws.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Turn the steering wheel the opposite direction and repeat Steps 1-5 for the other headlight bulb.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and verify both low beams work.
- Check that the dust caps are fully seated to keep moisture out of the headlamp.
- At night, confirm both beams look even on a wall; if one looks off, the bulb may not be fully locked.
