🔧 Sonata - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the headlight bulbs on both sides (left and right) by accessing the back of each headlamp housing, removing the old bulb, and installing a new one without touching the glass. This restores safe night visibility and prevents one dim/failed bulb from overworking the other.
Assumption: Your Sonata uses halogen bulbs; confirm the exact bulb type by matching the number printed on the old bulb (common types are H7 for low beam and 9005 for high beam).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the headlights cool before touching the housing or bulb.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oils shorten bulb life). Use nitrile gloves or wipe with isopropyl alcohol if you accidentally touch it.
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ If you’ll be working near the battery positive terminal, remove jewelry and use care to avoid shorting.

- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Clean lint-free towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (match type from old bulb, commonly H7) - Qty: 2
- High beam headlight bulb (match type from old bulb, commonly 9005) - Qty: 2 (only if replacing high beams too)
- Replacement plastic push clips (splash shield/liner) - Qty: 2-6 (optional, in case any break)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the rear covers/connectors on each headlamp assembly.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for color match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which bulb you’re replacing (low vs high)
- Use a flashlight behind the headlamp to find the bulb locations.
- Low beam is typically the larger rear dust-cap area on the headlamp housing; high beam is usually a separate smaller socket.
- Plan to do the same steps on the other side once you finish the first side.
Step 2: Create working room (if needed)
- If your hand access is tight, remove nearby intake/cover pieces using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Remove any plastic push-clips with a trim clip removal tool (this tool lifts the clip without snapping it).
- Tip: Put bolts/clips in a small cup.
Step 3: Remove the electrical connector from the bulb
- Grip the connector (not the wires) and pull it straight back.
- If it has a lock tab, press the tab with your thumb (or gently with a Phillips screwdriver #2) while pulling.
Step 4: Remove the dust cap (if equipped)
- Twist the rear dust cap counterclockwise by hand and remove it.
- Set it aside somewhere clean and dry.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- If the bulb is a twist-lock style, rotate it counterclockwise and pull it out.
- If the bulb is held by a metal spring retainer, press and unhook the spring, then swing it open and remove the bulb.
- Look at the bulb base and note its orientation (tabs/slots) so the new bulb seats the same way.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (no-touch rule)
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Lock it in place by twisting clockwise, or re-latching the spring retainer (depending on your bulb holder style).
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and a clean lint-free towel, then let it dry.
Step 7: Reinstall dust cap and reconnect the connector
- Reinstall the dust cap and twist clockwise until snug (hand-tight only).
- Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks or feels fully seated.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same removal/installation steps on the opposite headlamp.
- Use your flashlight to confirm both connectors and dust caps are fully installed.
Step 9: Reinstall any parts you moved for access
- Reinstall any covers, air ducting, or brackets you removed using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Reinstall push-clips by pressing them in by hand (use the trim clip removal tool only if you need help aligning).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both sides illuminate.
- Test high beams and low beams to make sure you didn’t replace the wrong bulb.
- Check that the dust caps are sealed (this helps prevent moisture/fogging inside the headlamp).
- At night, verify the beam pattern looks even; if one side looks odd, the bulb may not be fully seated.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$260 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only, depending on bulb type/brand)
You Save: $90-$140 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
