🔧 HR-V - Headlight Bulb Replacement

This guide covers replacing both left and right low-beam headlight bulbs on your HR-V. Replacing both sides together keeps brightness and color even, and it helps prevent the older bulb from failing shortly after the new one.

📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your HR-V on level ground and set the parking brake.
• 💡 Turn the headlight switch OFF.
• 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
• 📌 The low-beam bulb is the main nighttime driving bulb. On your HR-V, it is accessed from the rear of each headlight housing inside the engine bay.
• 📌 If you are replacing high-beam bulbs instead, those use a different bulb type: 9005 high-beam bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

• Pull the hood release inside the cabin.
• Release the hood safety latch by hand at the front of the hood.
• Raise the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
• Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housings.

Step 2: Locate the Driver-Side Low-Beam Bulb

• Stand at the front of your HR-V and look behind the driver-side headlight.
• Find the low-beam bulb connector at the back of the headlight housing.
• The connector is the plastic plug attached to the wiring going into the bulb.
• If a wire harness clip blocks your hand, use a flat trim removal tool to gently move the clip aside.
• Take a photo before unplugging.

Step 3: Disconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector

• Press the locking tab on the bulb connector by hand.
• Pull the connector straight rearward off the bulb.
• Do not pull on the wires.
• If the connector is tight, wiggle the plastic connector gently while pressing the tab.

Step 4: Remove the Driver-Side Bulb

• Grip the rear of the bulb by hand.
• Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
• Do not force it. If it sticks, turn it slightly more and pull straight back.

Step 5: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb

• Hold the new H11 low-beam headlight bulb by the plastic base only.
• If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with a clean microfiber towel before installing.
• Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing.
• Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
• Turn the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
• No torque spec applies because the bulb locks by hand with a twist-lock base.

Step 6: Reconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector

• Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until it clicks.
• Gently tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked.
• Use the flashlight to confirm the connector sits straight and fully seated.

Step 7: Locate the Passenger-Side Low-Beam Bulb

• Move to the passenger side of the engine bay.
• Use the flashlight to find the low-beam bulb connector behind the passenger-side headlight.
• If access is tight near the washer filler neck or wiring, use a flat trim removal tool to gently move flexible clips out of the way.
• Do not bend hard plastic parts sharply.

Step 8: Disconnect the Passenger-Side Bulb Connector

• Press the connector locking tab by hand.
• Pull the connector straight rearward off the bulb.
• Do not twist the connector while pulling it off.
• Use the flashlight to make sure the connector seal is not stuck to the old bulb.

Step 9: Remove the Passenger-Side Bulb

• Grip the rear of the bulb by hand.
• Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
• Keep the old bulb away from the new bulb so the glass does not get scratched.

Step 10: Install the New Passenger-Side Bulb

• Hold the new H11 low-beam headlight bulb by the plastic base only.
• Align the bulb tabs with the headlight housing slots.
• Push the bulb straight into the housing.
• Turn the bulb clockwise until it locks.
• No torque spec applies because the bulb uses a hand-tight twist-lock base.
• Never touch the bulb glass.

Step 11: Reconnect the Passenger-Side Bulb Connector

• Push the connector onto the bulb until the locking tab clicks.
• Gently tug the connector by hand to verify it is secure.
• Use the flashlight to check that no wiring is pinched or stretched.

Step 12: Test the Headlights

• Turn the headlight switch ON.
• Stand in front of your HR-V and confirm both low beams illuminate.
• Switch the headlights OFF after testing.
• If one side does not work, turn the lights OFF and recheck the connector on that side.

Step 13: Close the Hood

• Remove all tools from the engine bay.
• Lower the hood carefully and latch it securely.
• Pull up gently on the front edge of the hood to confirm it is fully latched.

• ✅ Test low beams, high beams, parking lights, and turn signals before driving at night.
• 🌙 At night, park about 25 feet from a wall and confirm both low-beam patterns look even.
• ⚠️ If one beam points much higher or lower, the bulb may not be fully seated.
• 🔁 Recheck the connectors after the first drive if a bulb flickers.
• 💡 Dispose of old bulbs carefully. The glass can break easily.
