🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Assumption: This guide covers both front headlight bulbs on your F-150. If your truck has factory HID low beams, the bulb type and access differ from halogen.

Replacing both headlight bulbs is a straightforward job, but access is tight and it’s best to replace both sides at the same time so the light output stays even. The exact bulb type depends on the headlamp package, so the steps below focus on the common access method and safe replacement process.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights off and let them cool before touching the bulbs.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will unplug HID or LED headlamp components.
  • Do not touch halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; oil shortens bulb life.
  • If your F-150 has HID headlamps, the system uses high voltage. Avoid opening the igniter or ballast side of the lamp.
  • Make sure the ignition is off before unplugging the lamp connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2
  • Headlamp dust cap seals - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
  • If needed for access, remove the radiator cover and front grille fasteners carefully.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Create access to the headlamp housing

  • Use a 7mm socket, 8mm socket, and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove any upper shroud or cover fasteners blocking the back of the headlamp.
  • If needed, use a trim panel tool to release plastic retainers without breaking them.
  • Keep every fastener in order.

Step 2: Remove the rear dust cap

  • Turn the rear access cap counterclockwise by hand, or gently release it if it is clipped in place.
  • Set the cap aside on a clean surface so dirt does not get inside the lamp housing.

Step 3: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Unplug the electrical connector from the bulb or bulb socket.
  • If the connector feels stuck, wiggle it gently instead of pulling on the wires.
  • For HID headlamps, do not disturb the high-voltage side of the assembly.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise if it uses a twist-lock base.
  • If it uses a retaining spring, release the spring carefully and slide the bulb out.
  • Use gloves and a clean microfiber cloth to handle the new bulb only by its base.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Insert the new bulb in the same position as the old one.
  • Lock it in place by turning it clockwise or reattaching the spring clip.
  • Reconnect the bulb connector until it clicks fully into place.

Step 6: Reinstall the dust cap and access trim

  • Install the rear dust cap and make sure it seals correctly.
  • Reinstall any shrouds, covers, and retainers using the 7mm socket, 8mm socket, and trim panel tool.

Step 7: Test both headlights

  • Turn the headlights on and verify low beam and high beam operation.
  • Check that both sides are aimed the same and both bulbs illuminate evenly.
  • If one side does not work, recheck the connector and bulb seating.

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm both bulbs light up on low beam and high beam.
  • Check for moisture inside the headlamp housing after a short drive.
  • Make sure all covers are fully sealed.
