🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Tacoma is a beginner-friendly job. The bulbs install from behind each headlight housing, so you do not need to remove the headlight assemblies for a normal bulb replacement.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on; halogen bulbs get very hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulbs with bare fingers. Skin oil can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Replace both sides together so the light color and brightness match.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch fully off.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
- A halogen bulb is a glass bulb filled with gas; avoid touching the glass because oil from your skin can damage it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Pull the hood release inside your Tacoma.
- Lift the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight assembly.
- Take a photo before unplugging anything.
Step 2: Locate the Driver-Side Headlight Bulb
- Stand in front of your Tacoma and look behind the driver-side headlight housing.
- Find the bulb connector at the back of the housing.
- The connector is the plastic electrical plug attached to the bulb.
- Use your flashlight if the area is hard to see.
Step 3: Unplug the Driver-Side Bulb Connector
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Press the locking tab on the electrical connector by hand.
- Pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- Wiggle the plug gently if stuck.
Step 4: Remove the Driver-Side Bulb
- Grip the bulb base by hand.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- No bolts are removed, and no torque spec applies to this bulb-retainer style.
Step 5: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb
- Remove one new headlight bulb from the package while wearing nitrile gloves.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber towel.
- Line up the tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight housing.
- Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Bulb
- Move to the passenger side of your Tacoma.
- Use the flashlight to locate the bulb connector behind the passenger-side headlight housing.
- Press the connector locking tab by hand and pull the connector straight back.
- Rotate the old bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the old bulb straight out.
- Install the second new headlight bulb by lining up the tabs and turning it clockwise until locked.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 7: Test Both Headlights
- Turn the ignition key to ON or start your Tacoma if needed.
- Turn on the headlights.
- Check that both low beams work.
- Switch to high beams and check both high beams.
- If one side does not work, turn the lights off and use your flashlight to verify the connector is fully seated.
Step 8: Check Bulb Seating
- Turn the headlights off.
- Use the flashlight to inspect both bulb bases from behind the housings.
- Make sure each bulb is fully twisted into the locked position.
- A loose bulb can point the beam incorrectly or let moisture into the housing.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Park your Tacoma facing a wall or garage door at night and confirm both beams are even.
- ✅ If the beam pattern looks crooked, recheck that the bulb tabs are fully seated in the housing.
- ✅ Dispose of the old bulbs carefully so the glass does not break.
- ✅ No scan tool, programming, battery reset, or infotainment reset is needed.
