Assumption: This guide covers the two front halogen headlight bulbs on your Equinox. If your vehicle has factory HID/xenon lights, the procedure is different.

🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Replacing both headlight bulbs restores full nighttime visibility and keeps the light output even from side to side. It is best to replace bulbs in pairs so both headlights match in brightness and color.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching anything.
  • Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Use gloves and safety glasses.
  • If your Equinox has HID headlights, do not use this guide for the bulb swap.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Flat trim tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is cool.
  • Keep the new bulbs in their packaging until you are ready to install them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and access the headlamp area

  • Open the hood and secure it.
  • Stand at the front of the vehicle and locate the rear of the headlamp housing behind each headlight.
  • Work on one side at a time.

Step 2: Remove the upper radiator support cover fasteners

  • Use the 7mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the fasteners along the top cover if they block access.
  • Lift the cover out carefully with a flat trim tool if needed.
  • No torque spec applies for removal.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb connector

  • Reach behind the headlamp housing and locate the bulb connector.
  • Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently. Do not force it.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Put on gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Insert the new bulb into the headlamp housing in the same position as the old one.
  • Twist it clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 6: Test the new bulb

  • Turn the headlight switch on and check that the new bulb works.
  • If the bulb does not light up, turn the lights off and recheck the connector.

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps on the opposite headlight.
  • Replacing both bulbs at the same time keeps the light output even.

Step 8: Reinstall the cover and fasteners

  • Reinstall any cover or fasteners you removed.
  • Use the 7mm socket to snug the fasteners.
  • Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs) if a torque wrench is available.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both low beams from the driver seat.
  • Make sure the beam pattern is level and even.
  • Confirm there is no warning message on the dash.
  • Close the hood and test the lights again in a dark area.
