🔧 Mustang - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Mustang means removing access covers behind each headlamp, unplugging the bulb connectors, and installing new bulbs without touching the glass. Your Mustang uses an enclosed headlamp housing, so clean handling matters to prevent early bulb failure.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the headlights cool before touching anything behind the lamp housings.
  • ⚠️ Turn the lighting switch fully OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable if you are uncomfortable working near live electrical connectors.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulbs. Skin oil can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If your Mustang has factory HID headlamps, do not service them with the lights on because HID systems use very high voltage.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • Flat trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

Note: Replace both headlight bulbs together so brightness and color match side to side.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Mustang on level ground with the parking brake engaged.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • If disconnecting the battery, use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal and move the cable aside.
  • Wear nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs. Gloves keep oil from your skin off the bulb glass.
  • Assumption: This guide covers the standard replaceable headlight bulb service path. If equipped with factory HID, use extra caution and replace with the correct HID bulb type only.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Headlamp Backs

  • Use your hands to release the hood latch and raise the hood.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Stand at the front of your Mustang and look behind each headlight housing inside the engine bay.
  • The bulb access point is at the rear of each headlamp housing.
  • Work on one side at a time.

Step 2: Remove the Air Intake Snorkel if Extra Room Is Needed

  • On the passenger side, use a flat trim removal tool to lift any plastic push clips holding the intake snorkel area, if it blocks your hand access.
  • A trim removal tool is a flat plastic pry tool that removes clips without scratching nearby plastic.
  • Set the clips aside in a safe place.
  • If a small fastener is present, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove it.
  • Lift the plastic snorkel or cover out of the way.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Headlight Dust Cover

  • Use your hand to grip the round rear dust cover on the back of the headlamp housing.
  • Turn the cover counterclockwise until it unlocks.
  • Pull the cover straight rearward and set it aside.
  • The dust cover seals dirt and moisture out of the headlamp.

Step 4: Disconnect the Bulb Electrical Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
  • Pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling. Do not pull on the wires.
  • If needed, use a flat trim removal tool carefully to help release the connector tab.

Step 5: Remove the Old Headlight Bulb

  • Use your hand to turn the bulb counterclockwise until it unlocks from the housing.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out.
  • Compare the old bulb to the new low beam headlight bulb to make sure the base shape matches.
  • Do not drop anything into the housing.

Step 6: Install the New Headlight Bulb

  • Hold the new low beam headlight bulb by the plastic base only.
  • If the glass is touched by accident, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber cloth.
  • Insert the bulb into the headlamp opening with the tabs aligned.
  • Turn the bulb clockwise by hand until it locks firmly in place.
  • No torque spec applies because this bulb locks by hand with a twist-lock base.

Step 7: Reconnect the Bulb Connector

  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal area only.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive moisture barrier used to protect electrical connectors.
  • Push the electrical connector straight onto the bulb until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector by the plastic body to make sure it is locked.

Step 8: Reinstall the Dust Cover

  • Place the dust cover back onto the rear of the headlamp housing.
  • Turn it clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Make sure the cover sits evenly all the way around to keep moisture out.

Step 9: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Move to the opposite headlamp and repeat Steps 3 through 8.
  • Use the same nitrile gloves, clean microfiber cloth, and hand-twist method.
  • If access is tight, use the flat trim removal tool to move nearby plastic clips only if needed.

Step 10: Reinstall Any Removed Intake Pieces

  • Place the intake snorkel or plastic cover back into position if removed.
  • Reinstall plastic push clips by hand, then press the centers down until flush.
  • If a fastener was removed, use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall it snugly.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for small 10mm-head plastic cover fasteners when applicable.

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery if Disconnected

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal because it can crack or deform.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the headlights ON and confirm both new bulbs light up.
  • ✅ Check low beams and high beams from outside the vehicle.
  • ✅ Make sure both rear dust covers are fully locked to prevent fogging inside the headlights.
  • ✅ At night, park 25 feet from a wall and confirm both beams are level and aimed similarly.
  • ✅ If a bulb does not work, turn the lights OFF and recheck the connector lock and bulb seating.
