🔧 Mustang - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Mustang involves opening the hood, accessing each headlamp from behind, removing the old bulb, and installing the new one without touching the glass or LED surface. Your Mustang uses HID low-beam headlights from the factory on GT models, so handle the bulbs and connectors carefully.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ HID headlight systems can produce high voltage when powered on. Keep the headlight switch off and do not turn the lights on while connectors are unplugged.
- ⚠️ Let the headlights cool for at least 10 minutes before touching anything. Bulbs and housings can get hot.
- ⚠️ Disconnecting the negative battery cable is recommended for first-time DIYers. This helps prevent accidental short circuits.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of HID bulbs. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Replace both headlight bulbs together so the color and brightness match side-to-side.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- HID headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Mustang on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable. The negative cable is usually marked with a minus symbol.
- Wear nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs. Nitrile gloves are thin disposable gloves that keep oil from your hands off the bulb.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Prepare the Work Area
- Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it.
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight housing.
- Use safety glasses to protect your eyes while working around plastic clips and tight spaces.
- Take a photo before unplugging anything.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative battery cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- No torque is needed during removal. During reinstallation, tighten the terminal snugly; do not overtighten.
Step 3: Access the Driver-Side Headlight Bulb
- Stand at the front of your Mustang and look behind the driver-side headlamp housing.
- Use a flashlight to locate the round rear bulb cover on the back of the headlight.
- If an intake duct or plastic cover limits access, use a trim clip removal tool to gently lift any plastic push clips. A trim clip tool is a flat fork-shaped tool that removes plastic clips without breaking them.
Step 4: Remove the Rear Headlight Cover
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the rear headlight cover counterclockwise.
- Pull the cover straight back and set it on a clean microfiber cloth.
- Do not drop dirt into the headlight housing.
Step 5: Unplug the Old Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to press the electrical connector lock tab.
- Pull the connector straight off the bulb. Do not pull on the wires.
- If the connector is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling straight back.
Step 6: Remove the Driver-Side Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the HID bulb counterclockwise until it unlocks.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- Keep the old bulb upright and avoid bumping the inside of the housing.
Step 7: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb
- Put on clean nitrile gloves before opening the new bulb package.
- Use a clean microfiber cloth only if you accidentally touch the bulb glass.
- Insert the new bulb into the housing in the same position as the old one.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks into place.
- Do not force it. The tabs must line up correctly before it turns.
Step 8: Reconnect the Driver-Side Bulb
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal only. Dielectric grease is a protective electrical grease that helps keep moisture out.
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the bulb until it clicks or feels fully seated.
- Use your gloved hand to reinstall the rear headlight cover.
- Rotate the cover clockwise until it is fully locked.
Step 9: Replace the Passenger-Side Bulb
- Move to the passenger-side headlight housing.
- Use a flashlight to locate the round rear bulb cover.
- Repeat the same process: remove the rear cover, unplug the connector, rotate the old bulb counterclockwise, and pull it out.
- Install the new bulb with nitrile gloves, rotate it clockwise until locked, reconnect the electrical connector, and reinstall the rear cover.
Step 10: Reinstall Any Removed Covers or Clips
- If you removed plastic clips, use your fingers to push them back into place.
- If any clips are stubborn, use the trim clip removal tool gently to align them before pressing them down.
- Make sure no wiring is pinched behind either headlight.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal nut until snug.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if using a small torque wrench.
Step 12: Test the Headlights
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode.
- Turn the headlight switch on and verify both low beams turn on.
- Check that both beams are similar in color and brightness.
- If one side does not work, turn the lights off before checking the connector again.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Mustang and confirm both headlights stay on without flickering.
- Check the beam aim against a wall from about 25 feet away. The beams should be even and not aimed sharply upward.
- If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and any window auto-up function if needed.
- To relearn window auto-up, fully close the window and hold the switch up for about 2 seconds.
- Dispose of old HID bulbs properly. Many parts stores or recycling centers accept them.
