🔧 Highlander - Headlight Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces both front headlight low-beam bulbs on your Highlander. Replacing both sides together keeps brightness and color even from left to right.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before touching anything near the headlamp housings.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb. Skin oil can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses. The bulb area is tight and plastic edges can be sharp.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the ignition off and the headlight switch off.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and make sure the headlight switch is off.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- A halogen bulb is a glass bulb that gets very hot during use. Handle it only by the plastic base.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber towel before installing it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the low-beam bulb sockets
- Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight assembly from inside the engine bay.
- The low-beam bulb is in the headlamp housing and has an electrical connector attached to the rear of the bulb.
- The driver side has less room, so move slowly and use the flashlight to see the connector clearly.
- Take a phone photo first.
Step 2: Disconnect the passenger-side bulb connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the locking tab on the electrical connector with your fingers.
- If the tab is stiff, gently use a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the tab while pulling the connector straight back.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
Step 3: Remove the passenger-side bulb
- Grip the plastic base of the bulb with your gloved hand.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- No torque spec applies here because the bulb locks by hand with a twist-lock tab.
Step 4: Install the new passenger-side bulb
- Remove one new H11 halogen bulb from the package while holding only the plastic base.
- Line up the tabs on the bulb with the slots in the headlight housing.
- Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
- Turn the bulb clockwise until it stops and feels locked in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 5: Disconnect the driver-side bulb connector
- Use a flashlight to view the back of the driver-side headlight housing.
- Press the connector locking tab with your fingers.
- If needed, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently press the tab.
- Pull the connector straight back from the bulb base.
Step 6: Remove the driver-side bulb
- Grip the plastic base of the bulb with your gloved hand.
- Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- Keep the old bulb nearby until the new bulb is fully installed so you can compare the locking tabs if needed.
Step 7: Install the new driver-side bulb
- Hold the second new H11 halogen bulb by the plastic base only.
- Line up the bulb tabs with the headlight housing slots.
- Push the bulb straight into the housing.
- Turn the bulb clockwise until it locks.
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
Step 8: Test both headlights
- Stand clear of moving engine parts.
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode or start the engine if needed.
- Turn on the low-beam headlights.
- Check that both new bulbs illuminate evenly.
- Turn the lights off after testing.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Verify both headlights work on low beam.
- ✅ Check the beam pattern against a wall or garage door. Both beams should appear even and at similar height.
- ✅ If one side does not work, turn the headlights off and recheck that the connector is fully clicked onto the bulb.
- ✅ Dispose of old halogen bulbs safely. Wrap them in the new bulb packaging or a paper towel before throwing them away.
