🔧 Wrangler - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Wrangler is a beginner-friendly job. The headlight bulbs sit behind the front grille, so the grille must be loosened and removed to access both lamp housings.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition off before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the headlights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of the new halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is not normally required for this bulb-only repair.
  • ⚠️ Work gently around the grille clips and plastic tabs so they do not crack.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • T15 Torx screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Wrangler on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
  • 📌 A Torx screwdriver has a star-shaped tip used on many Jeep screws.
  • 📌 Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps protect electrical connectors from moisture.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to release the hood latches on both sides of the hood.
  • Lift the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • Use safety glasses while working near the grille and lamp openings.

Step 2: Remove the Upper Grille Retainers

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or plastic trim removal tool to lift the center pin of each upper grille plastic retainer.
  • Pull the retainers out by hand once the center pin is lifted.
  • Set the retainers on a clean microfiber towel so they do not roll away.
  • Work slowly; plastic clips get brittle.

Step 3: Release and Remove the Front Grille

  • Use both hands to gently pull the top of the grille forward.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool if needed to help release the lower grille clips.
  • Pull straight outward near each lower clip location until the grille releases.
  • Set the grille aside on a clean microfiber towel to avoid scratches.

Step 4: Remove the Headlight Retaining Ring

  • Choose one side to start.
  • Use a T15 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws holding the metal headlight retaining ring.
  • Hold the headlight with one hand while removing the last screw so it does not drop forward.
  • There is no service torque published for these small retaining-ring screws; reinstall them snug only.

Step 5: Pull the Headlight Forward

  • Use both hands to carefully pull the headlight assembly forward from the bucket.
  • Do not pull hard on the wiring harness behind the lamp.
  • Support the headlight while you access the bulb connector at the rear.

Step 6: Disconnect the Bulb Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
  • If the connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.
  • Pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
  • Never yank on the wires.

Step 7: Remove the Old Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to twist the old bulb counterclockwise if it uses a twist-lock base.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • If your replacement style uses a locking ring, release the ring by hand and remove the bulb straight out.
  • Place the old bulb aside on the microfiber towel.

Step 8: Install the New Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves to handle the new headlight bulb by the plastic base only.
  • Insert the bulb into the housing in the same position as the old one.
  • Twist clockwise by hand until it locks, or reinstall the locking ring if equipped.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel and rubbing alcohol if the glass was accidentally touched.

Step 9: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Use your fingertip to apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease inside the connector seal area.
  • Push the connector straight onto the bulb until it clicks or feels fully seated.
  • Gently tug the connector body by hand to confirm it is locked.

Step 10: Reinstall the Headlight

  • Place the headlight back into the bucket by hand.
  • Align the headlight tabs and retaining ring correctly.
  • Use the T15 Torx screwdriver to reinstall the retaining-ring screws.
  • Tighten the screws evenly until snug; do not overtighten into the headlight bucket.

Step 11: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the T15 Torx screwdriver to remove the retaining ring on the opposite headlight.
  • Repeat the same bulb removal, connector check, new bulb installation, and retaining-ring installation steps.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs so both headlights have matching brightness and color.

Step 12: Test Both Headlights Before Reinstalling the Grille

  • Use the headlight switch to turn on low beams.
  • Use the multifunction stalk to test high beams.
  • Walk to the front and confirm both headlights work on low and high beam.
  • If one does not work, turn the switch off and use your fingers to reseat the connector.

Step 13: Reinstall the Front Grille

  • Use both hands to align the lower grille clips with their openings.
  • Push the grille straight in by hand until the lower clips snap into place.
  • Use your hand to align the top grille holes.
  • Reinstall the plastic retainers by hand, then push the center pins down flush.

Step 14: Close the Hood

  • Use your hand to remove the hood prop rod and secure it in its holder.
  • Lower the hood carefully.
  • Latch both hood latches by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Park about 25 feet from a wall at night and confirm both beams shine at a similar height.
  • ✅ If the beam pattern looks uneven, the headlight aim may need adjustment.
  • ✅ Check again after the first drive to make sure both headlights still work.
  • ✅ Dispose of old bulbs safely; do not crush the glass.
