🔧 Outback - Low Beam Headlight Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces both low beam headlight bulbs on your Outback. Replacing both sides together keeps brightness and color even, and it helps avoid doing the same job again soon.

Assumption: This guide is for the standard halogen low beam bulbs. If your Outback has factory HID headlights, do not use halogen bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition fully off before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb. Skin oil can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement, but keep the light switch off the whole time.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Flat trim tool
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulbs, H7 halogen - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Outback on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Put on nitrile gloves before opening the new bulbs.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive protective grease used around electrical connector seals to help keep moisture out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Low Beam Bulb Covers

  • Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it.
  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight housing.
  • The low beam bulb sits behind a round rear access cover on the back of the headlight housing.
  • Work on one side at a time.

Step 2: Remove the Driver Side Rear Headlight Cover

  • Use your gloved hand to turn the round rear cover counterclockwise.
  • If it is tight, use a clean microfiber towel for extra grip.
  • Pull the cover straight back and set it somewhere clean.
  • No fastener torque is used on this cover; reinstall by hand only.

Step 3: Disconnect the Driver Side Bulb Connector

  • Use your gloved fingers to grip the electrical connector on the rear of the bulb.
  • Pull the connector straight rearward off the bulb terminals.
  • If the connector is stubborn, use a flat trim tool gently at the connector body only.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Release the Driver Side Bulb Retaining Spring

  • Use your gloved finger to press the wire retaining spring inward and move it away from its hook.
  • The retaining spring is a small wire clip that holds the bulb firmly against the headlight housing.
  • Swing the retaining spring away from the bulb.
  • Use a flashlight if you need to see the hook position clearly.

Step 5: Remove the Driver Side Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to pull the old H7 bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Notice the bulb tab position before removal. The new bulb must sit the same way.
  • Do not let the old bulb fall inside the engine bay.

Step 6: Install the New Driver Side Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves to handle the new H7 bulb by its metal base only.
  • Insert the new bulb into the headlight housing in the same orientation as the old bulb.
  • Make sure the bulb sits flat and fully seated.
  • Never touch the glass.

Step 7: Lock the Driver Side Retaining Spring

  • Use your gloved finger to swing the retaining spring back over the bulb base.
  • Press the spring inward and hook it back into place.
  • Check that the bulb does not wiggle.

Step 8: Reconnect the Driver Side Bulb Connector

  • Use a clean gloved finger to apply a very small amount of dielectric grease around the connector seal, not on the bulb glass.
  • Push the electrical connector straight onto the bulb terminals until fully seated.
  • Use your flashlight to confirm the connector is square and not crooked.

Step 9: Reinstall the Driver Side Rear Cover

  • Place the round rear cover onto the back of the headlight housing.
  • Use your gloved hand to turn it clockwise until it is snug.
  • Do not use pliers or force. The cover seals by hand pressure only.

Step 10: Replace the Passenger Side Bulb

  • Use the flashlight to locate the passenger side rear headlight cover.
  • Repeat Steps 2 through 9 on the passenger side using the same tools and method.
  • Work slowly because space may feel tighter on one side.
  • Patience beats broken clips.

Step 11: Test Both Headlights

  • Turn the ignition to accessory or start the engine.
  • Turn on the low beam headlights.
  • Walk to the front of your Outback and confirm both low beams are working.
  • If one side does not work, turn the lights off and recheck the connector seating.

Step 12: Confirm Beam Pattern

  • Park facing a wall or garage door about 25 feet away.
  • Turn on the low beams and check that both beams look even.
  • If one beam looks very high, low, or scattered, turn the lights off and re-seat that bulb.
  • No torque spec applies unless headlight aiming screws are adjusted, which is not normally needed for bulb replacement.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm both low beams work with the headlight switch in the ON position.
  • ✅ Confirm high beams, parking lights, and turn signals still work.
  • ✅ Make sure both rear access covers are fully locked to keep water and dust out.
  • ✅ Dispose of the old bulbs carefully because the glass can break.
  • ✅ No scan tool reset, battery registration, or infotainment reset is required.
