🔧 Tucson - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs on your Tucson is a beginner-friendly repair. You’ll access the bulbs from behind each headlight housing, remove the old bulbs, and install the new ones without removing the bumper.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight bulbs cool before touching anything near the housing.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Replace bulbs in pairs so both headlights match in brightness and color.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools

- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
- 📦 Open the new bulb boxes only when you are ready to install them.
- ℹ️ A retaining spring is a small metal clip that holds the bulb firmly inside the headlight housing.
- ℹ️ Dielectric grease is an electrical-safe grease used sparingly on connector seals to help keep moisture out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Use your hand to release the hood safety latch at the front of the hood.
- Use the hood prop rod to hold the hood open securely.
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of each headlight housing.
Step 2: Locate the Driver-Side Low-Beam Bulb Cover
- Use a flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlight assembly.
- Find the round rear dust cover behind the low-beam bulb area.
- Use your hand to rotate the cover counterclockwise and remove it.
- Set the cover on a clean microfiber towel.
Step 3: Disconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector
- Use your hand to grip the electrical connector at the rear of the bulb.
- Pull the connector straight back off the bulb terminals.
- If it feels tight, gently wiggle it while pulling straight back by hand.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Release the Driver-Side Bulb Retaining Spring
- Use your fingers to press the metal retaining spring inward and slightly to the side.
- Swing the retaining spring away from the bulb.
- Use a flashlight if you need a better view of the clip position.
- No torque spec applies because this bulb is held by a spring clip, not a bolt.
Step 5: Remove the Driver-Side Old Bulb
- Use your gloved hand to pull the old H7 bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- Note the bulb tab orientation before fully removing it.
- Place the old bulb on the clean microfiber towel.
Step 6: Install the Driver-Side New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to handle the new H7 bulb by the metal base only.
- Do not touch the glass part of the bulb.
- Use your hand to place the new bulb into the headlight housing in the same orientation as the old bulb.
- Make sure the bulb sits flat and fully seated in the opening.
- Bulb must sit flat before clipping.
Step 7: Secure the Driver-Side Retaining Spring
- Use your fingers to swing the retaining spring back over the bulb base.
- Press the spring inward and lock it into its catch.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the bulb is straight and the spring is fully latched.
Step 8: Reconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector
- Use your finger to apply a very small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal only.
- Use your hand to push the connector straight onto the bulb terminals until fully seated.
- Do not pack grease into the metal terminals.
Step 9: Reinstall the Driver-Side Dust Cover
- Use your hand to place the round dust cover back onto the rear of the headlight housing.
- Rotate it clockwise until snug.
- No torque spec applies because the dust cover is hand-tightened.
Step 10: Replace the Passenger-Side Bulb
- Use a flashlight to locate the round rear dust cover behind the passenger-side headlight housing.
- Use your hand to rotate the cover counterclockwise and remove it.
- Use your hand to pull the connector straight back from the bulb.
- Use your fingers to release the retaining spring.
- Use your gloved hand to remove the old H7 bulb.
- Use nitrile gloves to install the new H7 bulb by the metal base only.
- Use your fingers to lock the retaining spring back into place.
- Use your hand to reconnect the bulb connector.
- Use your hand to reinstall the dust cover clockwise until snug.
Step 11: Test Both Headlights
- Use the headlight switch to turn the low beams ON.
- Stand in front of your Tucson and check that both low beams work.
- Use the headlight switch to turn the lights OFF after testing.
- If one bulb does not light, turn the switch OFF and recheck that connector by hand.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both dust covers are fully installed to keep water and dust out of the headlight housings.
- ✅ Check the beam pattern against a wall or garage door at night.
- ✅ If one beam looks much higher or lower than before, the bulb may not be seated flat.
- ✅ Dispose of the old halogen bulbs safely. Do not crush them.
