🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Tacoma is a beginner-friendly repair. The bulbs install from the back of each headlamp housing, so you do not need to remove the bumper or headlight assemblies.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulb. Skin oil can create hot spots and shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Replace both headlight bulbs as a pair so brightness and color match side-to-side.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but keep the light switch off the entire time.

- 9003/H4 halogen headlight bulbs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 💡 Turn the headlight switch fully off.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
- 📦 Open the new bulb package only when you are ready to install each bulb.
- 🔎 The headlight bulb is accessed from behind the headlamp assembly inside the engine bay.
- 🧰 A small flathead screwdriver is only used if a connector tab is stubborn. It helps lift a plastic locking tab gently.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cab.
- Use your hand to release the secondary hood latch at the front center of the hood.
- Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlamp housing.
Step 2: Find the Driver-Side Headlight Connector
- Use the flashlight to locate the black electrical connector on the back of the headlight bulb.
- The connector plugs directly into the rear of the bulb.
- Take a photo before unplugging.
Step 3: Unplug the Driver-Side Bulb
- Use your hand to grip the connector, not the wires.
- Pull the connector straight rearward off the bulb.
- If the connector is stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help release the plastic tab while pulling with your hand.
- Do not pry hard. The connector and tabs are plastic.
Step 4: Remove the Rubber Dust Boot
- Use your hand to pull the round rubber dust boot straight off the back of the headlamp housing.
- The dust boot keeps water and dirt out of the headlight housing.
- Set it on a clean microfiber towel so dirt does not stick to the sealing surface.
Step 5: Release the Bulb Retaining Spring
- Use your fingers to press the metal retaining spring inward, then move it slightly to the side to unhook it.
- The retaining spring is a small wire clip that holds the bulb tight against the headlight housing.
- Let the spring swing open carefully.
- Do not bend the spring out of shape.
Step 6: Remove the Old Driver-Side Bulb
- Use your hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Note the position of the bulb tabs before removal. The new bulb must sit the same way.
- Place the old bulb on the microfiber towel.
Step 7: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves before touching the new bulb.
- Use your hand to hold the new 9003/H4 bulb by the metal base only.
- Line up the bulb tabs with the matching slots in the headlamp housing.
- Insert the bulb straight into the housing until it sits flat.
- Do not force it. If it does not sit flat, remove it and realign the tabs.
Step 8: Lock the Retaining Spring
- Use your fingers to swing the metal retaining spring back over the bulb base.
- Press it inward and hook it back into its latch point.
- Gently wiggle the bulb base by hand. It should not move.
Step 9: Reinstall the Rubber Dust Boot
- Use your hand to press the rubber dust boot back onto the rear of the headlamp housing.
- Make sure the boot lip seats evenly all the way around.
- This seal is important because it keeps moisture out of the headlight.
Step 10: Reconnect the Driver-Side Electrical Connector
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector terminals if desired.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps protect electrical connectors from moisture.
- Use your hand to push the connector straight onto the bulb terminals until fully seated.
- Do not pack the connector full of grease. Use only a light film.
Step 11: Replace the Passenger-Side Bulb
- Use the flashlight to locate the passenger-side headlight connector behind the headlamp housing.
- Use your hand to unplug the connector from the bulb.
- Use your hand to remove the rubber dust boot.
- Use your fingers to unhook the metal retaining spring.
- Use your hand to remove the old bulb.
- Use your hand to install the new 9003/H4 bulb by the metal base only.
- Use your fingers to lock the retaining spring back into place.
- Use your hand to reinstall the rubber dust boot evenly.
- Use your hand to reconnect the electrical connector.
Step 12: Test Both Headlights
- Use your hand to turn the headlight switch to low beam.
- Check that both low beams work.
- Use your hand to switch to high beam.
- Check that both high beams work.
- If one side does not work, turn the lights off and use your hand to check that the connector is fully seated.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Park about 25 feet from a wall or garage door on level ground and confirm both beams look even.
- ✅ If one beam looks much higher or lower than before, make sure the bulb is seated flat in the housing.
- ✅ Close the hood securely after testing.
- ✅ Dispose of the old halogen bulbs safely. Do not break the glass.
