🔧 Canyon - Ball Joint Replacement

On your Canyon, the front lower ball joint is built into the lower control arm from the factory, so the correct service method is to replace the lower control arm assembly. The upper ball joint is serviced with the upper control arm assembly. This guide covers replacing the front lower control arm/ball joint assembly on one side.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ The front suspension supports vehicle weight. Use jack stands only; never work under a truck held by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Ball joint separation can release suddenly. Keep hands and face away from the joint when using the separator.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on the steering knuckle. It can damage the knuckle or wheel bearing.
  • ⚠️ If equipped with ABS wiring near the work area, do not stretch or pull the harness.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • ⚠️ An alignment is required after replacing a control arm or ball joint assembly.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Canyon on a flat, solid surface.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the lower ball joint nut and lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • A ball joint separator is a tool that presses the tapered ball joint stud out of the steering knuckle without damaging it.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower control arm cam bolts before removal. These marks help you get close enough to drive to an alignment shop.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a breaker bar and the correct lug nut socket to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break nuts loose before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Canyon at a solid front frame lifting point.
  • Place jack stands under the frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the truck lightly to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use the lug nut socket and ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm near the ball joint.
  • Lift the jack just enough to support the arm. Do not raise the truck off the jack stand.
  • This keeps the suspension from dropping suddenly when the ball joint is separated.

Step 5: Remove Any Brackets in the Way

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any brake hose or ABS wire retaining bracket attached to the lower control arm, if present.
  • Move the bracket gently aside.
  • Do not pull on the brake hose or ABS wire.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin and Nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint stud.
  • Use a 21mm socket or 22mm socket to loosen the lower ball joint nut.
  • Remove the nut, then thread it back on a few turns by hand. This protects the threads during separation.

Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle

  • Place the ball joint separator between the lower control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.
  • Use the correct socket or wrench for the separator tool and tighten it until the joint pops loose.
  • Remove the lower ball joint nut fully using the 21mm or 22mm socket.
  • Slowly lower the floor jack a small amount so the ball joint stud clears the steering knuckle.
  • The pop can be loud.

Step 8: Mark the Control Arm Cam Bolt Positions

  • Use a paint marker to mark the front and rear cam bolt washer positions on the frame brackets.
  • These cam bolts adjust alignment. A cam bolt is an offset washer/bolt that changes control arm position.

Step 9: Remove the Lower Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench, or 21mm socket and 21mm wrench depending on bolt size, to remove the front lower control arm mounting nut and bolt.
  • Use the matching socket and wrench to remove the rear lower control arm mounting nut and bolt.
  • Use a pry bar to gently work the control arm out of the frame brackets.
  • Remove the lower control arm with the ball joint assembly from the truck.

Step 10: Install the New Lower Control Arm Assembly

  • Position the new lower control arm in the frame brackets by hand.
  • Use a rubber mallet only if light help is needed to seat the bushings.
  • Install the front and rear mounting bolts and nuts by hand.
  • Do not fully tighten the control arm mounting bolts yet.
  • Final-tighten at ride height.

Step 11: Connect the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle

  • Use the floor jack to raise the lower control arm until the ball joint stud enters the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new lower ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 21mm or 22mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
  • Continue tightening only as needed to line up the cotter pin hole. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to install and bend the new cotter pin.

Step 12: Reinstall Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any brake hose or ABS wire bracket removed earlier.
  • Tighten the bracket bolt snugly.
  • Make sure the hose and wire are not twisted or stretched.

Step 13: Set the Suspension to Ride Height

  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the suspension until the control arm sits close to normal driving position.
  • Align the cam bolt marks you made earlier using a paint marker as your guide.
  • This prevents the rubber bushings from being tightened while twisted.

Step 14: Tighten the Lower Control Arm Bolts

  • Use an 18mm or 21mm socket and wrench with the torque wrench to tighten the lower control arm mounting bolts.
  • Tighten each lower control arm mounting bolt to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
  • If your replacement hardware includes different instructions, follow the part manufacturer’s supplied torque guidance.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Install the wheel onto the hub by hand.
  • Use the lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the truck to the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench and lug nut socket to tighten the wheel lug nuts to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked to check for hose, wire, or suspension contact.
  • Test drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or rubbing.
  • Recheck the ball joint nut, cotter pin, brackets, and lug nut torque after the first short drive.
  • Schedule a professional front wheel alignment immediately. Control arm replacement changes alignment.
  • If the steering wheel is off-center or the truck pulls, avoid highway driving until aligned.
