📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to slightly loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet. Just break them loose about half a turn.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck
- Use a floor jack under the front frame lift point to raise your Colorado.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the stands and shake it lightly to confirm it is stable.
- Use the 21mm socket to remove the lug nuts and front wheel.
Step 3: Remove the Brake Caliper and Rotor
- Use an 18mm socket to remove the front brake caliper bracket bolts.
- Lift the caliper and bracket off together, then hang it with a brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
- Slide the brake rotor off the wheel hub by hand.
- If the rotor is stuck, tap the hat area gently with a 3-lb hammer.
Step 4: Disconnect ABS Wire and Brake Hose Brackets
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any ABS wire or brake hose brackets attached to the control arm or steering knuckle.
- Move the wiring and hose aside carefully so they are not stretched.
- Take a phone photo first.
Step 5: Separate the Tie Rod End
- Use needle-nose pliers or side cutters to remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod end.
- Use an 18mm socket or 18mm wrench to remove the tie rod castle nut.
- Use a ball joint separator to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
- A castle nut is a slotted nut that uses a cotter pin to keep it from loosening.
- On reassembly, tighten the tie rod nut to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs), then continue tightening only enough to install a new cotter pin.
Step 6: Separate the Upper Ball Joint
- Use needle-nose pliers or side cutters to remove the upper ball joint cotter pin.
- Use an 18mm wrench to loosen and remove the upper ball joint castle nut.
- Use a ball joint separator to pop the upper ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
- Support the steering knuckle with one hand or a floor jack so it does not pull on the brake hose or ABS wire.
Step 7: Replace the Upper Control Arm Assembly
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the upper control arm alignment cams and washers.
- Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the upper control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
- Remove the upper control arm assembly from the frame brackets.
- Install the new upper control arm assembly in the same position as your paint marks.
- Leave the pivot bolts snug, not fully tight, until the suspension is at normal ride height.
- Reconnect the upper ball joint stud to the steering knuckle using an 18mm wrench.
- Tighten the upper ball joint nut to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs), then continue tightening only enough to install a new cotter pin.
Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint
- Place the floor jack under the lower control arm to support it.
- Use needle-nose pliers or side cutters to remove the lower ball joint cotter pin.
- Use a 24mm socket from the metric socket set to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut a few turns, but leave it on the stud.
- Use a ball joint separator to separate the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
- After it pops loose, remove the castle nut completely using the 24mm socket.
- Lift the steering knuckle off the lower ball joint and support it so the brake hose and ABS wire are not strained.
Step 9: Press Out the Lower Ball Joint
- Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust from the ball joint area.
- Use snap ring pliers to remove the lower ball joint retaining snap ring.
- Set up the ball joint press kit with the correct receiver cup under the lower control arm.
- Use the ball joint press kit and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to press the old lower ball joint downward and out of the control arm.
- Keep the press straight so the control arm bore is not damaged.
- Go slow and check alignment often.
Step 10: Press In the New Lower Ball Joint
- Clean the ball joint bore using a wire brush.
- Position the new lower ball joint squarely in the lower control arm.
- Use the ball joint press kit and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to press the new joint upward into the control arm until fully seated.
- Install the new retaining snap ring using snap ring pliers.
- Confirm the snap ring is fully seated in its groove.
Step 11: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint
- Guide the steering knuckle back over the lower ball joint stud by hand.
- Install the lower ball joint castle nut using a 24mm socket from the metric socket set.
- Tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs), then continue tightening only enough to install a new cotter pin.
- Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
Step 12: Reinstall the Tie Rod End
- Insert the tie rod end into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the castle nut using an 18mm socket or 18mm wrench.
- Tighten the tie rod nut to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs), then continue tightening only enough to install a new cotter pin.
- Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
Step 13: Reattach Brackets and Brakes
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall ABS wire and brake hose brackets.
- Slide the brake rotor back onto the hub by hand.
- Reinstall the brake caliper and bracket assembly.
- Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Load the Suspension and Tighten Upper Control Arm Bolts
- Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the suspension until the truck just begins to lift off the jack stand.
- This simulates normal ride height and prevents bushing twist.
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the upper control arm pivot bolts to Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel
- Install the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
- Use the 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the truck to the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Pump the brake pedal until it feels firm before driving.
- ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for binding or popping.
- ✅ Test drive slowly first. Check that your Colorado tracks straight and the steering feels normal.
- ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
