🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to read the stored trouble code.
- If the code says Sensor 1, look on the exhaust pipe close to the engine before the catalytic converter.
- If the code says Sensor 2, look after the catalytic converter farther downstream.
- Use a flashlight if needed to trace the sensor wire from the exhaust pipe to its electrical connector.
- Match the code before removing anything.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle if Needed
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Canyon at a proper front lifting point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame.
- Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands.
- Push the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before getting underneath.
Step 3: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- This helps prevent electrical shorts while unplugging the oxygen sensor.
Step 4: Unplug the Oxygen Sensor Connector
- Follow the sensor wire from the exhaust pipe to the connector.
- Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab and separate the plug.
- If a wiring retainer is clipped to a bracket, use a trim clip removal tool to release it.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small fork-shaped tool that removes plastic clips without breaking them.
- Do not twist the wire while it is still plugged in.
Step 5: Loosen the Old Oxygen Sensor
- Spray the sensor threads with penetrating oil spray.
- Let it soak for 5-10 minutes.
- Place the 7/8 inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor.
- An oxygen sensor socket has a slot in the side so the wire can pass through it.
- Use a 3/8 inch drive ratchet and 3/8 inch drive extension 6 inch to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If it is tight, use steady pressure. Do not yank hard, because the exhaust bung can be damaged.
- Slow steady force works best.
Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, continue turning the sensor counterclockwise by hand.
- Carefully pull the old sensor away from the exhaust pipe.
- Compare the old sensor to the new sensor before installation.
- Make sure the connector shape and wire length match.
Step 7: Prepare the New Oxygen Sensor
- Check whether the new oxygen sensor already has anti-seize on the threads.
- If it does not, apply a very small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound only to the threads.
- Do not touch or coat the sensor tip.
- The sensor tip is the small end that sits inside the exhaust stream.
Step 8: Install the New Oxygen Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- Turn it clockwise several turns by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Cross-threading means the threads are not lined up correctly and can strip the exhaust fitting.
- Use the 7/8 inch oxygen sensor socket with a 3/8 inch drive torque wrench.
- Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Wiring
- Route the wire the same way the original wire was routed.
- Keep the wire away from hot exhaust parts and moving components.
- Push the connector together until it clicks.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to help reinstall any wiring clips if needed.
- Make sure the wire is not twisted or stretched.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
Step 11: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to slightly lift your Canyon off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 12: Clear Codes and Check Operation
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear stored oxygen sensor trouble codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for exhaust leaks near the sensor location.
- Take a short test drive and recheck for codes.
