📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Silverado on level, solid ground with the front wheels pointing straight.
- Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- Measure from a fixed point on the tie rod to the center of the outer stud using the tape measure. Write down the measurement.
- Mark the tie rod threads and jam-nut position using the paint marker.
- Count every full turn used to remove the old end. This keeps the alignment close enough for the trip to the alignment shop.
- Confirm that the replacement joint matches the old stud taper, thread direction, overall length, and grease-fitting arrangement before installation.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Wheel Nuts
- With the tire still touching the ground, use the 22mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen each wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Don’t remove the nuts yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point.
- Position the 3-ton jack stand under the frame and lower the truck onto it.
- Leave the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as backup support.
- Push the truck gently to confirm it’s stable before reaching into the wheel well.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use the 22mm deep socket to remove the loosened wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and slide it underneath the frame as an additional safety measure.
Step 4: Check That the Outer Joint Is Faulty
- Grip the tie rod near the outer joint using your gloved hand.
- Move the steering knuckle side to side while watching the stud. Any movement between the stud and joint confirms wear.
- If movement comes from the steering rack side instead, the inner tie rod may be the faulty part.
Step 5: Mark the Existing Adjustment
- Use the wire brush to clean the exposed threads and jam nut.
- Apply penetrating oil to the jam nut and outer tie rod threads.
- Use the paint marker to draw a line across the tie rod, jam nut, and old outer end.
- Use the tape measure to confirm and record the original installed length.
- Good marks save a crooked drive afterward.
Step 6: Loosen the Jam Nut
- The jam nut is the large nut that locks the outer end onto the threaded inner tie rod.
- Hold the outer tie rod end with the adjustable wrench.
- Use the correctly fitting combination wrench to break the jam nut loose.
- Move the jam nut only enough to free the outer end. Don’t spin it far from the marked position.
Step 7: Remove the Cotter Pin and Nut
- Straighten the cotter pin using the needle-nose pliers, then pull it completely out.
- Discard the cotter pin. Never reuse it.
- Use the correctly fitting deep socket and breaker bar to loosen the castellated nut.
- Leave the nut threaded onto the stud by three or four turns while separating the joint.
Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod Stud
- Place the tie rod end puller over the steering-knuckle arm and stud.
- Tighten the puller using the correctly fitting socket until the tapered stud releases.
- Remove the loosened castellated nut and lift the stud out of the steering knuckle.
- Don’t hammer directly on the stud or strike the steering knuckle.
Step 9: Remove the Old Outer End
- Turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand.
- Count and record every complete turn until it comes off.
- Leave the jam nut in its marked position.
- Compare the old and new parts before proceeding. Their stud taper, threads, and installed length must match.
Step 10: Install the New Outer End
- Thread the new end onto the inner tie rod by hand using exactly the same number of turns recorded during removal.
- Align it with the original paint mark and measured length.
- Don’t force the threads. If it won’t turn smoothly by hand, stop and check the thread direction and part fitment.
Step 11: Connect the Stud to the Knuckle
- Insert the new tapered stud into the steering-knuckle arm.
- Install the supplied castellated nut by hand.
- Use the correctly fitting socket and torque wrench to tighten the outer tie rod stud nut to 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter-pin holes don’t align, tighten the nut only enough to reach the next slot. Never loosen it to align the hole.
- Install a new cotter pin using the needle-nose pliers and bend both ends securely around the nut.
Step 12: Tighten the Jam Nut
- Hold the new outer tie rod end with the adjustable wrench so it doesn’t twist.
- Use the combination wrench to tighten the jam nut against the new end.
- Torque to 75 Nm (55 ft-lbs) when access permits use of the torque wrench and appropriate crowfoot.
- Confirm the tie rod length and paint marks haven’t moved.
Step 13: Lubricate the New Joint
- If the replacement includes a grease fitting, install it using the correctly fitting small wrench.
- Use a grease gun to add chassis grease until the boot just begins to swell.
- Stop before the boot becomes tight. Overfilling can split it.
- Skip this step if the new tie rod end is permanently sealed.
Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel onto the hub and install all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep socket to snug them in a crisscross pattern.
- Remove the safety stand and lower the truck using the 3-ton floor jack.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and turn the steering slowly from side to side while parked. Listen for binding or clunking.
- Confirm the cotter pin is installed, the grease boot isn’t twisted, and the jam nut remains tight.
- Drive slowly on a quiet, level road only far enough to reach an alignment shop.
- Stop immediately if the steering wheel is badly off-center, the truck pulls sharply, or the steering feels loose.
- Have a four-wheel alignment performed. Replacing a tie rod changes toe, which is the direction each front tire points relative to the truck’s centerline.
- Recheck wheel-nut torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
