- ⚠️ Work only on a completely cool exhaust. Oxygen sensors thread into the exhaust and can cause severe burns.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your 1500 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- Let the exhaust cool fully. If you recently drove, wait at least 1 hour.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative 12V battery cable.
- Bank 1 is the passenger-side cylinder bank on the 3.6L V6. Bank 2 is the driver-side cylinder bank.
- Upstream sensors are before the catalytic converters. Downstream sensors are after the catalytic converters.
- An oxygen sensor socket is a 22mm socket with a slot cut in the side so the wire can pass through.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your 1500 at the front crossmember.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front frame support points.
- Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands.
- Shake the truck lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before crawling underneath.
Step 2: Locate All Four Oxygen Sensors
- Use a shop light to follow the exhaust pipes from the engine downward.
- Find the passenger-side upstream sensor before the catalytic converter. This is Bank 1 Sensor 1.
- Find the passenger-side downstream sensor after the catalytic converter. This is Bank 1 Sensor 2.
- Find the driver-side upstream sensor before the catalytic converter. This is Bank 2 Sensor 1.
- Find the driver-side downstream sensor after the catalytic converter. This is Bank 2 Sensor 2.
- Label each connector before unplugging.
Step 3: Spray the Sensor Threads
- Use penetrating oil spray on the metal threads where each sensor screws into the exhaust pipe.
- Let the penetrating oil soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Do not spray the electrical connectors heavily.
Step 4: Unplug the Bank 1 Upstream Sensor
- Use a shop light to trace the Bank 1 upstream sensor wire to its connector.
- Press the connector lock tab by hand and unplug it.
- If the connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers gently on the lock tab only.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release any wiring retainers from the bracket.
Step 5: Remove the Bank 1 Upstream Sensor
- Slide the wire through the slot in the 22mm oxygen sensor socket.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If space is tight, use the 22mm crowfoot oxygen sensor wrench with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet.
- Remove the sensor from the exhaust by hand once loose.
- Do not twist the wiring harness.
Step 6: Install the New Bank 1 Upstream Sensor
- Compare the new Bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor to the old sensor before installing.
- If the new sensor threads are not pre-coated, apply a tiny amount of anti-seize compound rated for oxygen sensors to the threads only.
- Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip.
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten it.
- Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Route the wire the same way as the original and reconnect the electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
Step 7: Replace the Bank 1 Downstream Sensor
- Use the shop light to locate the Bank 1 downstream sensor behind the passenger-side catalytic converter.
- Unplug the connector by hand and release wiring clips with the trim clip removal tool.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the sensor counterclockwise.
- Install the new Bank 1 downstream oxygen sensor by hand first.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten it.
- Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the connector and secure the wiring away from the exhaust.
Step 8: Replace the Bank 2 Upstream Sensor
- Move to the driver side and use the shop light to locate the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter.
- Unplug the connector by hand. Use needle-nose pliers gently if the lock tab is stubborn.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to release wiring retainers.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket or 22mm crowfoot oxygen sensor wrench with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the old sensor.
- Install the new Bank 2 upstream oxygen sensor by hand first.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten it.
- Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the connector and clip the harness back into place.
Step 9: Replace the Bank 2 Downstream Sensor
- Use the shop light to locate the Bank 2 downstream sensor after the driver-side catalytic converter.
- Unplug the sensor connector by hand.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to free the wiring clips.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the old sensor.
- Install the new Bank 2 downstream oxygen sensor by hand first.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten it.
- Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the connector and make sure the wire cannot touch the exhaust.
Step 10: Inspect the Wiring Routing
- Use the shop light to check all four sensor harnesses.
- Use replacement wiring clips where any original clips broke.
- Make sure each wire has clearance from the exhaust, driveshaft, steering shaft, and sharp heat shields.
- Bad wire routing can melt new sensors.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative 12V battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal snugly. Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
Step 12: Clear Codes and Check Operation
- Plug in the OBD2 scan tool under the driver-side dash.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear oxygen sensor and fuel trim codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Check underneath with a shop light for exhaust leaks or loose wiring.
Step 13: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your 1500 slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.

- Use the OBD2 scan tool to check for returning codes after the test drive.
