🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Cool the Engine and Open the Hood
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the cooling system.
- Open the hood and confirm the radiator, hoses, and coolant reservoir are cool to the touch.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand only after the engine is fully cold.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Position the Drain Pan
- Place the 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator hose connection you are replacing.
- Use a coolant spill mat under the drain pan if working on a driveway.
- Keep shop towels nearby for small spills.
Step 3: Remove Lower Splash Shield if Needed
- If replacing the lower radiator hose, use the floor jack 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tacoma.
- Support the frame securely with jack stands 3-ton minimum.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove splash shield bolts.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic clips.
- Set the splash shield aside.
Step 4: Drain Enough Coolant
- Use the drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- If accessible, open the radiator drain cock by hand or carefully with slip-joint pliers 10-inch.
- Drain enough coolant so the level falls below the hose you are replacing.
- If the drain cock is difficult to access, you can loosen the hose slowly and let coolant drain into the pan.
- Close the radiator drain cock by hand snugly. Do not overtighten.
Step 5: Release the Hose Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the tabs on the spring clamp.
- Slide the clamp several inches back onto the hose.
- Repeat this on the other end of the hose.
- If your Tacoma has screw-style replacement clamps, use a flathead screwdriver 6-inch to loosen them.
- Take a photo first.
Step 6: Remove the Old Radiator Hose
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose from the fitting.
- If it is stuck, use a flathead screwdriver 6-inch carefully between the hose and fitting to loosen the rubber.
- Do not gouge or scratch the radiator neck or engine outlet.
- Pull the hose off and aim any remaining coolant into the drain pan.
Step 7: Clean the Hose Fittings
- Use shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings clean.
- Check the fittings for cracks, corrosion, or old rubber stuck to the surface.
- Do not use sharp metal tools on plastic radiator fittings.
- The hose must seal against a smooth, clean surface.
Step 8: Install the New Hose
- Compare the new radiator hose to the old hose before installing it.
- Push the new hose fully onto the radiator fitting by hand.
- Push the other end fully onto the engine-side fitting by hand.
- Make sure the hose is not twisted, kinked, or rubbing the fan, belt area, or sharp brackets.
- Match the original routing.
Step 9: Position the Hose Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to slide each spring clamp back into its original position.
- Position each clamp behind the raised bead on the hose fitting.
- If using screw-style clamps, tighten them evenly with a flathead screwdriver 6-inch until snug.
- Do not overtighten screw clamps because they can cut into the hose or damage plastic fittings.
Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- If removed, raise the splash shield into place by hand.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) for small splash shield bolts.
Step 11: Refill the Cooling System
- Use a funnel with narrow spout at the coolant reservoir/radiator fill point.
- Add Toyota-compatible pink long-life coolant 50/50 premix slowly.
- Fill the reservoir to the full mark when cold.
- Keep the coolant cap off for the first warm-up step if the fill point allows safe venting.
Step 12: Bleed Air from the System
- Start the engine and set the cabin heater to full hot with the blower on low.
- Let the engine idle while watching the temperature gauge.
- Use safety glasses and keep hands away from belts and fans.
- As air bubbles purge, add coolant with the funnel as the level drops.
- When warm air comes from the vents and the upper hose gets hot, the thermostat has opened.
- Install the coolant cap by hand until fully seated.
Step 13: Check for Leaks
- Use a flashlight if needed and inspect both hose ends.
- Look for drips, seepage, steam, or coolant smell.
- If a clamp seeps, shut the engine off, let it cool, then reposition the clamp with hose clamp pliers.
- Do not adjust hoses while the engine is hot.
