- Place a coolant drain pan under the radiator/hose area before loosening anything.
- A hose clamp plier is a tool that squeezes spring clamps evenly so they can slide off the hose safely.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove Access Covers if Needed
- Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a ratchet to remove any lower splash shield fasteners blocking access to the lower hose.
- Set the fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same places.
- Take a quick photo first.
Step 2: Relieve Cooling System Pressure
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand only if the engine is completely cool.
- If you hear pressure escaping, stop and wait longer before continuing.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Position the coolant drain pan below the radiator hose you are replacing.
- If replacing the upper hose, drain or catch only enough coolant to lower the level below the hose connection.
- If replacing the lower hose, expect more coolant to drain when the hose is removed.
- Use clean shop towels around the area to control spills.
Step 4: Release the Hose Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs together.
- Slide each clamp a few inches away from the hose end.
- If your replacement area has worm-gear clamps, use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen them.
- Do not crush plastic radiator or thermostat housing fittings.
Step 5: Remove the Old Radiator Hose
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose from the fitting.
- If it is stuck, use a pick tool carefully between the hose and metal/plastic fitting to loosen the seal.
- Pull the hose off while keeping the coolant drain pan underneath.
- Do not pry hard against the radiator neck because it can crack.
- Twist first, pull second.
Step 6: Clean the Hose Connections
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine-side hose fittings.
- Make sure old rubber pieces are not stuck to the fittings.
- Inspect the fittings for cracks, corrosion, or rough edges before installing the new hose.
Step 7: Install the New Radiator Hose
- Slide the new radiator hose clamps onto the new radiator hose before pushing the hose onto the fittings.
- Push the hose fully onto both fittings by hand until it seats past the raised bead on each fitting.
- The raised bead is the small ridge that helps keep the hose from slipping off.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move spring clamps into their original positions behind the raised bead.
- If using worm-gear clamps, tighten them with a flat-head screwdriver until snug. Do not overtighten.
Step 8: Refill the Cooling System
- Use a funnel to add Motorcraft Yellow Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant or Ford-approved equivalent to the coolant reservoir.
- Fill to the MAX line on the reservoir when the engine is cold.
- If using coolant concentrate, mix it only with distilled water to the proper 50/50 ratio before adding.
Step 9: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the coolant reservoir cap off.
- Start the engine and let it idle while watching the coolant level.
- Turn the cabin heat to full hot and the blower to low using the climate controls.
- As air bubbles escape, use the funnel to add coolant and keep the level near the MAX line.
- Once the upper hose gets warm and the heater blows warm air, install the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
Step 10: Reinstall Covers and Lower the Vehicle
- If removed, reinstall the lower splash shield using an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a ratchet.
- If your Edge was raised, use the floor jack to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it slowly.
- No radiator hose clamp torque spec is used for spring clamps; they lock by spring tension.
✅ After Repair
- Let the engine reach normal operating temperature and check for leaks at both hose ends.
- Watch the temperature gauge. Shut the engine off if it rises above normal.
- After the engine cools completely, recheck the coolant level and top off to the MAX line if needed.
- Take a short test drive, then inspect the hose and clamps again for seepage.
- Dispose of old coolant properly at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts coolant.
