๐ Before You Begin
- Park your HR-V on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely. A safe rule is to wait at least 2-3 hours after driving.
- If replacing the lower radiator hose, raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack 2-ton minimum and support it with jack stands 2-ton minimum.
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator area before loosening any hose.
- A hose clamp is the metal spring or screw clamp that squeezes the hose tightly onto the radiator or engine fitting.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Let the Engine Cool and Remove the Cap
- Confirm the radiator and hoses are cool by touching them with a gloved hand.
- Use nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Position the Drain Pan
- Slide a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the hose you are replacing.
- For the upper radiator hose, place the pan under the upper radiator connection.
- For the lower radiator hose, place the pan under the lower radiator connection.
Step 3: Raise the Front if Replacing the Lower Hose
- If replacing only the upper hose, you can usually work from above.
- If replacing the lower hose, use a floor jack 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your HR-V.
- Support the vehicle with jack stands 2-ton minimum before going underneath.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove any lower splash shield clips blocking access.
Step 4: Loosen the Hose Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs together.
- Slide each clamp several inches back onto the hose.
- If your replacement hose uses screw-style clamps, use a flat-blade screwdriver 6mm tip to loosen them.
- Do not pry against the plastic radiator neck. It can crack.
Step 5: Break the Hose Free
- Twist the hose gently by hand to loosen it from the radiator or engine fitting.
- If the hose is stuck, use a pick tool 90-degree carefully between the hose and fitting to break the seal.
- Do not cut deeply near the radiator neck.
- Pull the hose off slowly and let coolant drain into the pan.
- Twist first, pull second.
Step 6: Remove the Old Hose
- Use hose clamp pliers or slip-joint pliers 10-inch to move the second clamp back.
- Twist and pull the other end of the hose off by hand.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe coolant from nearby parts.
Step 7: Inspect the Hose Fittings
- Check the radiator neck and engine fitting for cracks, corrosion, or old rubber stuck to the surface.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe the fittings clean.
- If a plastic radiator neck is cracked, the radiator must be replaced before installing the hose.
Step 8: Install the New Hose
- Slide the new clamps onto the new hose before installing it.
- Push the new hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to position spring clamps behind the raised bead on each fitting.
- If using screw-style clamps, tighten them with a flat-blade screwdriver 6mm tip until snug. Do not overtighten.
- No torque spec is used for Honda spring clamps. They must sit squarely behind the fitting bead.
Step 9: Refill the Cooling System
- Use a funnel with long neck to add Honda-compatible premixed coolant into the coolant reservoir.
- Fill to the MAX line on the reservoir.
- If a large amount of coolant was lost, refill slowly and pause so air can escape.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe up spills.
Step 10: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Start the engine and let it idle with the coolant reservoir cap off.
- Set the cabin heater to full hot and the fan to low using the climate controls.
- Watch the coolant level in the reservoir and add coolant with the funnel with long neck as the level drops.
- Let the engine warm up until the radiator fan cycles on.
- Install the coolant reservoir cap by hand once the level stabilizes.
Step 11: Recheck for Leaks
- Use a flashlight if available to inspect both ends of the new hose.
- Use clean shop towels to dry the hose connections, then watch for fresh coolant.
- If a clamp is not seated squarely, use hose clamp pliers to reposition it after the engine cools.
โ After Repair
- Drive your HR-V for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge.
- After the engine cools fully, recheck the coolant level and top off to the MAX line if needed.
- Inspect the hose ends again after the first drive.
- Dispose of old coolant properly at a recycling center or repair shop. Do not pour it on the ground or into a drain.
- If the engine overheats, the heater blows cold, or coolant level keeps dropping, stop driving and recheck for trapped air or leaks.
