Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Let the Engine Cool

- If the hose or coolant reservoir feels warm or pressurized, wait longer.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Remove the Coolant Reservoir Cap
- Use gloves and safety glasses.
- Slowly turn the coolant reservoir cap by hand counterclockwise.
- If you hear pressure escaping, stop and wait until it finishes before removing the cap fully.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Place a large drain pan under the radiator area below the hose you are replacing.
- Use a flashlight to make sure the pan is centered under the hose connection.
- Coolant may splash when the hose comes loose.
Step 4: Drain Enough Coolant
- If replacing the upper radiator hose, you only need to lower the coolant level below the upper hose connection.
- If replacing the lower radiator hose, expect most of the radiator coolant to drain out.
- If equipped with an accessible radiator drain, use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully open the drain and let coolant flow into the pan.
- If the drain is not easily accessible, drain by loosening the hose slowly in the next step.
Step 5: Release the Hose Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the tabs on the spring clamp.
- Slide the clamp several inches back onto the hose.
- If your replacement hose uses worm-drive clamps, use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen them.
- Repeat this on both ends of the hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Hose
- Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose from the radiator or engine fitting.
- If it is stuck, use slip-joint pliers to gently rotate the hose, not crush the fitting.
- Use a plastic trim tool to help lift the hose edge if needed.
- Do not pry hard on plastic radiator fittings because they can crack.
- Pull the hose off and let coolant drain into the pan.
- Twist first, pull second.
Step 7: Clean the Hose Fittings
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings.
- Use a flashlight to inspect the fittings for cracks, corrosion, or leftover rubber pieces.
- Do not use sandpaper or a metal scraper on plastic radiator fittings.
Step 8: Install the New Hose
- Compare the new radiator hose to the old one by hand before installing it.
- Slide the clamps onto the new hose before pushing the hose onto the fittings.
- Push the hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings until it seats past the raised bead.
- The raised bead is the small ridge on the fitting that helps keep the hose from sliding off.
Step 9: Position and Tighten the Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to move spring clamps back into their original positions, just behind the raised bead.
- If using worm-drive clamps, use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to snug the clamps evenly.
- Do not overtighten worm-drive clamps on plastic fittings.
- Torque to snug only; no published clamp torque is required for standard service hose clamps.
Step 10: Refill the Cooling System
- Install a coolant funnel kit on the coolant reservoir opening.
- Pour the correct coolant mixture into the reservoir slowly.
- If using concentrate, mix coolant and distilled water to a 50/50 mix before filling.
- Fill to the cold fill range marked on the reservoir.
Step 11: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the coolant funnel kit installed.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Set the heater controls inside the cab to full hot and low fan speed.
- Watch the coolant level in the funnel and add coolant if the level drops.
- Let the engine warm up until the upper radiator hose gets warm and the heater blows hot air.
- Use a flashlight to check the hose connections for leaks while the engine idles.
Step 12: Finalize the Coolant Level
- Turn the engine off and let it cool completely.
- Remove the coolant funnel kit carefully.
- Install the coolant reservoir cap by hand until fully seated.
- After the engine cools, recheck the coolant level and top off to the cold fill range if needed.
