📋 Before You Begin

- Open the hood and locate the hose you are replacing. The upper radiator hose runs from the top of the radiator to the engine. The lower radiator hose runs from the bottom of the radiator to the engine.
- A hose clamp is the metal band that squeezes the hose tightly onto the radiator or engine fitting.
- A spill-free funnel is a funnel that locks onto the radiator neck and helps remove trapped air from the cooling system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Let the Engine Cool
- Use your hand carefully near the radiator area to check for heat, but do not touch hot metal parts.
- Wait until the radiator, upper hose, and engine feel cool to the touch.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before opening the cooling system.
- Cold engine only. No shortcuts.
Step 2: Remove the Radiator Cap
- Place a shop towel over the radiator cap.
- Slowly turn the radiator cap by hand to the first stop to release any leftover pressure.
- Once pressure is gone, press down and turn the cap fully off by hand.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Place the 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain area.
- If replacing the lower radiator hose, also place the pan under the lower hose connection because more coolant will spill there.
- Use a flashlight to check that the pan is centered below the work area.
Step 4: Drain Some Coolant
- Use your hand to open the radiator drain cock at the bottom of the radiator if accessible.
- If the drain cock is tight, use slip-joint pliers gently. Do not force it, because the plastic can break.
- Drain enough coolant so the level is below the hose you are replacing.
- Close the radiator drain cock by hand once coolant flow slows.
- Torque to snug by hand only; do not overtighten the plastic drain cock.
Step 5: Move Any Small Obstructions
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove any small brackets or splash shield fasteners blocking hose access.
- Use a plastic trim tool to release any plastic clips if needed.
- Keep all bolts and clips together so they go back in the same places.
- Take a photo before removal.
Step 6: Release the Hose Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the tabs on the spring clamp.
- Slide the clamp several inches back onto the hose.
- Repeat this at the other end of the hose.
- If your Tacoma has worm-drive screw clamps, use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen each clamp.
- Torque for worm-drive clamps on installation: snug only, about 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs).
Step 7: Break the Hose Loose
- Use your hand to twist the hose back and forth to loosen it from the radiator or engine fitting.
- If stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the hose and fitting to break the seal.
- Do not gouge the plastic radiator neck or aluminum engine fitting.
- Use shop towels to catch leftover coolant.
Step 8: Remove the Old Hose
- Pull the hose straight off by hand once it is loose.
- Keep the drain pan under the hose because trapped coolant may pour out.
- Compare the old hose to the new radiator hose to confirm the shape, bends, and length match.
Step 9: Clean the Hose Fittings
- Use shop towels to wipe the radiator neck and engine fitting clean.
- Use a flashlight to inspect both fittings for cracks, corrosion, or leftover rubber stuck to the sealing area.
- Do not sand or scrape aggressively on plastic radiator fittings.
- Clean fittings prevent leaks.
Step 10: Install the New Hose
- Slide the clamps onto the new hose first by hand.
- Push the new hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings by hand.
- Make sure the hose sits past the raised bead on each fitting. The bead is the small raised ridge that helps hold the hose in place.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move each spring clamp into its original position behind the raised bead.
- If using worm-drive clamps, use a flat-blade screwdriver to tighten evenly.
- Torque worm-drive clamps to 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reinstall Any Removed Brackets or Clips
- Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to reinstall any removed brackets.
- Use the plastic trim tool by hand to help seat any plastic clips if needed.
- Torque small 10mm body/bracket bolts to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs) unless the bracket requires a specific higher value.
Step 12: Refill the Cooling System
- Install the spill-free funnel kit onto the radiator neck.
- Pour Toyota Super Long Life Coolant 50/50 premix into the funnel until the radiator is full.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the “FULL” line using the funnel.
- Leave some coolant in the spill-free funnel while bleeding air.
Step 13: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off and the spill-free funnel installed.
- Set the heater controls inside your Tacoma to full hot and low fan speed.
- Watch the coolant level in the funnel. Add Toyota Super Long Life Coolant 50/50 premix as the level drops.
- Use your hand carefully to squeeze the upper radiator hose a few times once it is warm, while keeping hands away from the fan and belts.
- Wait for steady heat from the vents and fewer air bubbles in the funnel.
- Do not let the engine overheat. Shut it off if the temperature gauge climbs above normal.
Step 14: Install the Radiator Cap
- Turn the engine off.
- Use the spill-free funnel stopper to remove the funnel without spilling coolant.
- Install the radiator cap by hand and turn it until fully locked.
- Wipe the area clean with shop towels.
