🔧 Fusion - Timing Belt Replacement

Your Fusion with the 2.0L plug-in hybrid engine does not use a timing belt. It uses an internal timing chain, which is designed to last much longer and is not a normal maintenance replacement item.

If you are hearing chain rattle, have cam/crank correlation codes, rough running, or a no-start condition, the correct repair is timing chain system diagnosis, not timing belt replacement.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Fusion on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔌 Unplug the charge cord from the vehicle.
  • 🔑 Turn the vehicle fully off and keep the key at least 10 feet away.
  • ⏱️ Wait at least 5 minutes so vehicle modules can go to sleep.
  • 🔋 Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • 📘 A timing chain is a metal chain inside the engine that keeps the crankshaft and camshafts synchronized.
  • 📘 A timing tool set locks the crankshaft and camshafts in the correct position so the engine timing does not move.
  • 📘 Torque means the exact tightness of a bolt, measured with a torque wrench.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Verify This Is Not a Timing Belt Job

  • Use safety glasses and open the hood.
  • Look at the front of the engine where the belt-driven accessories are located.
  • Your Fusion has an external serpentine belt for accessories, but the engine timing system is an internal chain.
  • Do not purchase a timing belt kit for this engine.
  • No timing belt is installed.

Step 2: Scan for Timing-Related Fault Codes

  • Connect the OBD-II scan tool with Ford hybrid system coverage to the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
  • Turn the vehicle to Ready mode without touching any high-voltage components.
  • Scan all modules and record any diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Common timing-related codes may include camshaft/crankshaft correlation or variable cam timing faults.
  • Do not clear codes until they are written down.

Step 3: Check 12V System Health Before Diagnosis

  • Use a digital multimeter set to DC volts.
  • Touch the red lead to the 12V battery positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal.
  • Vehicle off voltage should be around 12.6 volts on a healthy, charged battery.
  • Low 12V voltage can create false warning lights and confusing hybrid codes.

Step 4: Decide Whether Chain Repair Is Needed

  • If there are no timing codes and the engine runs quietly, no timing chain replacement is normally needed.
  • If there is startup rattle, metal noise from the timing cover, no-start, or repeated cam/crank correlation codes, continue with professional-level diagnosis.
  • If high-voltage or hybrid system codes are present, stop and have the vehicle inspected by a hybrid-qualified technician.

Step 5: Prepare for Timing Chain Service

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the correct front lift point.
  • Support the vehicle with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the right front wheel using a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar.
  • Remove the lower splash shield fasteners using an 8mm socket and plastic trim clip remover.

Step 6: Support the Engine

  • Install the engine support bar (specialty) across the upper body support points.
  • Attach the support chain to the engine lifting point.
  • Take light tension with the support bar before removing any mount bolts.
  • An engine support bar safely holds the engine when a mount is removed.

Step 7: Remove Accessory Drive Components

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the belt tensioner.
  • Slide the serpentine belt off the pulleys and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove accessible accessory bracket fasteners as needed.
  • Keep bolts organized by location.
  • Take photos before removing parts.

Step 8: Remove the Engine Mount and Timing Cover Access Parts

  • Use a 15mm socket, 18mm socket, and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the right-side engine mount fasteners.
  • Remove only after the engine is safely supported by the engine support bar (specialty).
  • Use a 10mm socket and 13mm socket to remove timing cover brackets and small cover fasteners.
  • Do not pry against sealing surfaces with metal tools.

Step 9: Remove the Crankshaft Pulley

  • Install the crankshaft pulley holding tool (specialty).
  • Use a 1/2-inch breaker bar and the correct socket from your set to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
  • Use the harmonic balancer puller (specialty) to remove the pulley if it does not slide off by hand.
  • Discard the crankshaft pulley bolt if it is torque-to-yield. Torque-to-yield bolts stretch and should not be reused.

Step 10: Remove Valve Cover and Front Timing Cover

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove valve cover fasteners.
  • Lift the valve cover carefully and remove the old valve cover gasket.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 13mm socket to remove front timing cover fasteners.
  • Use a gasket scraper carefully to separate old sealant without gouging aluminum.

Step 11: Lock Engine Timing

  • Rotate the crankshaft by hand using a 1/2-inch breaker bar until cylinder 1 is at top dead center.
  • Top dead center means the piston is at the very top of its travel on the compression stroke.
  • Install the Ford 2.0L timing tool set (specialty) to lock the crankshaft and camshafts.
  • Do not move the crankshaft or camshafts after the timing tools are installed.

Step 12: Replace Timing Chain Components

  • Use a 10mm socket and 13mm socket to remove the timing chain tensioner and guides.
  • Remove the old timing chain kit components.
  • Install the new timing chain guides, timing chain tensioner, and chain from the timing chain kit.
  • Align all timing marks exactly as directed by the timing tool set.
  • Torque values vary by fastener and build configuration. Use the Ford service specification for each bolt before tightening.

Step 13: Recheck Timing Before Closing the Engine

  • Remove the Ford 2.0L timing tool set (specialty) only after the tensioner is set.
  • Rotate the engine by hand two full crankshaft turns using a 1/2-inch breaker bar.
  • Reinstall the timing tools to confirm alignment.
  • If the tools do not fit easily, stop and correct the timing before reassembly.

Step 14: Reseal and Reinstall the Timing Cover

  • Clean old sealant from the cover and engine block using a gasket scraper.
  • Install a new crankshaft front seal.
  • Apply Motorcraft-approved silicone sealant in the correct locations.
  • Install the timing cover using a 10mm socket and 13mm socket.
  • Tighten fasteners in an even pattern.
  • Torque to Ford service specification

Step 15: Reinstall Removed Parts

  • Reinstall the valve cover with a new valve cover gasket using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the crankshaft pulley using a new crankshaft pulley bolt and 1/2-inch torque wrench.
  • Reinstall the right engine mount using a 15mm socket, 18mm socket, and 1/2-inch torque wrench.
  • Torque to Ford service specification
  • Remove the engine support bar (specialty) only after all mount bolts are installed and torqued.

Step 16: Reinstall Belt, Shield, and Wheel

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to reinstall the serpentine belt on the correct pulley path.
  • Install the splash shield using an 8mm socket and plastic trim clip remover.
  • Install the right front wheel using a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Torque wheel lug nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs)

Step 17: Refill Fluids and Reconnect Battery

  • Refill engine oil if drained and install a new oil filter.
  • Refill engine coolant if drained.
  • Reconnect the 12V battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Start the vehicle in Ready mode and check for leaks.

  • ✅ Let your Fusion reach operating temperature and check for oil or coolant leaks.
  • ✅ Use the OBD-II scan tool with Ford hybrid system coverage to clear codes and recheck for returning timing faults.
