🔧 RAV4 - Hybrid Transaxle Fluid Change

This service replaces the hybrid transaxle fluid in your RAV4’s front hybrid transaxle. The hybrid system does not use a traditional automatic transmission with a pan and filter; it uses Toyota hybrid transaxle fluid that is drained and refilled through plugs.

• ⚠️ Your RAV4 is a hybrid. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or high-voltage components.

📋 Before You Begin

• 🅿️ Park your RAV4 on a flat, level surface.
• 🧊 Let the vehicle cool until the transaxle case is safe to touch.
• 🛞 Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• 🔋 Make sure the vehicle is fully OFF, not in READY mode. READY mode means the hybrid system can move the vehicle or start the engine automatically.
• 📏 The vehicle must be level when refilling. If you lift the front, support the rear evenly too.
• ♻️ Have a sealed container ready for the used fluid. Used ATF should be recycled properly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your RAV4 at the approved front lift point.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper support points.
• If needed, raise the rear evenly so the vehicle sits level.
• Use wheel chocks to keep the vehicle from rolling.
• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Shake the vehicle gently to confirm stability.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Undercover

• Use a 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the bolts holding the lower engine/transaxle undercover.
• Set the undercover and bolts aside in order.
• A transaxle is the hybrid unit that combines the electric motor drive and gear reduction assembly.

Step 3: Locate the Fill and Drain Plugs

• Use a shop towel to clean dirt from around both plugs before removal.
• The fill plug is on the side of the hybrid transaxle case.
• The drain plug is lower on the transaxle case.
• Both plugs use a 10mm hex socket.

Step 4: Remove the Fill Plug First

• Place the drain pan 8-quart minimum under the transaxle area.
• Use the 10mm hex socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to loosen and remove the fill plug.
• Remove and discard the old fill plug gasket.
• If the fill plug will not move, stop here.

Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid

• Move the drain pan 8-quart minimum directly under the drain plug.
• Use the 10mm hex socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the drain plug.
• Let the fluid drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
• Remove and discard the old drain plug gasket.
• Wipe the drain plug clean with a shop towel.

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug

• Install a new transaxle drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
• Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use the 10mm hex socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the drain plug.
• Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)

Step 7: Fill the Transaxle

• Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump (specialty) into the fill hole.
• A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump used to move fluid from the bottle into a hard-to-reach fill opening.
• Pump Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid into the transaxle slowly.
• Continue filling until fluid just begins to run back out of the fill hole in a small steady trickle.
• The typical refill amount is about 3.5-4.0 quarts, but the correct level is when fluid reaches the bottom edge of the fill hole.
• Go slowly near the end to avoid overfilling.

Step 8: Reinstall the Fill Plug

• Install a new transaxle fill plug gasket on the fill plug.
• Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
• Use the 10mm hex socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the fill plug.
• Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs)

Step 9: Clean and Reinstall the Undercover

• Use shop towels to wipe spilled fluid from the transaxle case.
• Reinstall the lower undercover.
• Use the 10mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to install the undercover bolts.
• Tighten the small undercover bolts snugly by hand. Do not overtighten them.

Step 10: Lower the Vehicle

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
• Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower your RAV4 slowly to the ground.
• Remove the wheel chocks.

• ✅ With your foot on the brake, shift through P, R, N, and D, pausing a few seconds in each position.
