🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Refill
On your Explorer, the automatic transmission fluid should be serviced with the correct low-viscosity ATF and the final level checked at the proper fluid temperature. Some units have a drain plug; others require pan removal, so I’ve included both paths below.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the exhaust and transmission cool before starting.
- Work on level ground. Fluid level checking depends on a level vehicle.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- Keep dirt out of the transmission. Clean around the fill and drain areas first.
- If equipped with an electronic parking brake, set it normally before lifting.
- No battery disconnect is required for a basic fluid service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan
- Funnel with long hose
- Fluid transfer pump
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- Ratchet
- Torque wrench
- Trim tool
- Scan tool or thermometer
- Plastic scraper
- Torque bit set
- Shop towels
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (MERCON LV) - Qty: 8 quarts
- Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
- Transmission filter - Qty: 1
- Transmission pan drain plug seal - Qty: 1
- Transmission pan bolts - Qty: 1 set
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Warm the vehicle slightly first if the transmission fluid is cold. Do not service it hot.
- Have the new fluid ready before opening the system.
- Keep everything clean.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the Explorer at the correct lift points.
- Support it with jack stands and chock the rear wheels.
- Make sure the vehicle sits level side-to-side.
Step 2: Remove the underbody shield
- Use the 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the splash shield fasteners.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Drain the transmission fluid
- If equipped with a drain plug: Place the drain pan under the transmission and remove the drain plug with the correct socket or torque bit.
- If no drain plug is present: Use the 10mm socket to remove the pan bolts, leaving a few loose at one end until the fluid starts to drain.
- Let the fluid drain fully.
Step 4: Remove the pan and filter
- Use the 10mm socket to remove the remaining pan bolts.
- Lower the pan carefully and pour out the remaining fluid.
- Remove the old transmission filter with your hands or a gentle pull.
Step 5: Clean and inspect
- Use a plastic scraper and shop towels to clean the pan mating surface.
- Clean the pan and magnet if equipped.
- Check for metal buildup. A light gray paste is normal; chunks are not.
- Do not scratch the sealing surface.
Step 6: Install the new filter and pan
- Push the new transmission filter into place.
- Install the new transmission pan gasket.
- Raise the pan and start all bolts by hand with the 10mm socket.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 ft-lbs) for the pan bolts, unless your pan label or service data shows a different spec.
Step 7: Refill with fresh fluid
- Lower the vehicle level.
- Use a funnel with long hose or fluid transfer pump to add MERCON LV through the fill location.
- Add about 5 quarts first, then add more slowly after the initial fill.
Step 8: Circulate the fluid
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- With your foot on the brake, move the shifter through each gear position for a few seconds.
- Return to Park.
Step 9: Set the final fluid level
- Use a scan tool or thermometer to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
- At the correct service temperature, add fluid slowly until it reaches the proper level per the fill/check procedure.
- Do not overfill. Extra fluid can cause aeration and shifting problems.
- Check level only at the correct temperature.
Step 10: Reinstall the shield and lower the vehicle
- Reinstall the splash shield with the 8mm socket.
- Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and check underneath for leaks.
- Road test the Explorer and confirm smooth shifts.
- Recheck the fluid level if the service procedure calls for a hot check after the test drive.
- If shift quality feels abnormal, verify the fluid level again before driving farther.
